Habitat -- cobble, gravel, sand, and boulder substrates; wide riparian zones; riffles at the upstream end of the reach; Fissidens in the riffles; pools and runs; low flow during the sampling, but there was recent evidence of very high flows (debris line — 8-15 ft. above normal flow). Water Quality -- specific conductance stable since 2004, within the norm for a watershed that is — 15% in agriculture. 2014 -- the number of fish declined by 43% between 2009 and 2014 and by 71 % since 2004 (791 vs. 397 vs. 227, especially for Crescent Shiner and Fantail Darter); 6 point decline in the NCIBI Score and a one class decrease in the NCIBI Rating resulted from the loss of several key species (e.g., White Sucker, Creek Chubsucker, Carolina Darter, and Johnny Darter) and an increase in the Percentage of Tolerant Fish (from 18% to 39% due to the abundance of Redbreast Sunfish, Green Sunfish, and Flat Bullhead); typical of many streams in the Carolina Slate Belt ecoregion, the fish community is subjected to extremely variable flows (very high flows followed by very low flows or vice versa). 2004-2014 -- not a very diverse community for the size of the stream, only 20 species known from the site including 3 species of darters, 2 species of suckers, and 0 Intolerant Species; dominant species is the Crescent Shiner; the only imperiled species known from this site is the Special Concern Carolina Darter which was collected in 2009. Recommendation -- based upon all the data collected, there has been a slight decline in the biological integrity of the fish community at this regional reference site since the last assessment; continued basinwide assessment of this site in 2019 to determine if the decline is persistent and to document any potential impacts from changing landuse in the watershed is recommended. Landuse -- greatest percentage of watershed in cultivation than any other fish community site sampled in the basin in 2014. Habitat -- 2nd greatest scoring of instream and riparian habitats of any fish community site in the basin; cobble, bedrock, boulder, gravel, sand, and silt substrates; slick periphyton-covered rocks; same habitats as in 2009 (high gradient, mountain -like, plunges, boulders, riffles and runs; deep pool at end of the reach; Rhododendron and Kalmia in the riparian zones). Water Quality -- 2nd lowest specific conductance of any fish community site in 2014 and stable since 2004. 2014 -- the number of fish collected declined by 24% between 2009 and 2014 (666 vs. 506, especially for Bluehead Chub, Redlip Shiner, Crescent Shiner, and White Sucker), but still a diverse and abundant fish community; lowest Percentage of Tolerant Fish of any site in the basin (0%); 2 point decline in the NCIBI Score and one rating class decline was due to the absence of of one species of sucker (White Sucker). 2004-2014 -- all metrics stable, no significant change in the community; diverse community with 22 species known from this small stream including 5 species of darters, 3 species of suckers, and 4 Intolerant Species (Cutlip Minnow, Smallmouth Bass, Riverweed Darter, and Roanoke Darter); imperiled species collected from this site include Riverweed Darter (Special Concern, collected in 2004, 2009, and 2014), Cutlip Minnow (Special Concern, collected in 2004 and 2009), and Roanoke Hog Sucker (Significantly Rare, collected in 2004, 2009, and 2014); dominant species is the Bluehead Chub and Redlip Shiner; since assessments began in 2004 only one trout (Brown Trout, 375 mm TL) has been collected at this site which is supplementally classified as Trout Waters. Recommendation -- based upon all the data collected, there has been no change in the water quality or fish community since 2004; continued basinwide assessment of this site in 2019 to document any potential impacts from changing landuse in the watershed. Habitat -- gravel, cobble, and sand substrate; riffles, runs, side snags pools and deep undercuts; very large coarse woody debris dam at the end of the reach; unstable channel shifting due to coarse woody debris dam. Water Quality -- specific conductance stable since 2004 and low for a watershed that is — 15% in agriculture. 2014 -- the number of fish declined by 70% between 2009 and 2014 (866 vs. 263, especially for Bluehead Chub, Redlip Shiner, Crescent Shiner, Johnny Darter, and Fantail Darter), but still the most speciose community of any site in the basin; slight shift in the trophic metrics (due to an abundance of the omnivorous Bluehead Chub which is an indicator of nonpoint nutrient enrichment) resulted in the 6 point decrease in the NCIBI Score and a one NCIBI Rating Class decrease; all other metrics did not change between 2009 and 2014. 2004-2014 -- very diverse community with 31 species known from the site including 11 species of cyprinids, 6 species each of suckers and darters, and 3 Intolerant Species (Chainback Darter, Roanoke Logperch, and Roanoke Darter); dominant species is the Bluehead Chub; Roanoke Hog Sucker collected in 2004, 2009, and 2014, the other imperiled species known from this site was the Endangered Roanoke Logperch which was collected in 2009. Recommendation -- based upon all the data collected, there has been no consistent long-term change in the water quality or fish community since 2004; continued basinwide assessment of this site in 2019 to document any potential impacts from changing landuse in the watershed is recommended. Habitat -- sand, cobble, and boulder substrate; wide channel; sandy runs; easily eroded steep banks; gravel, stick, and (rare) cobble riffles. Water Quality - specific conductance stable since 2004 and relatively low for a watershed that is — 30% in agriculture. 2014 -- the number of fish declined by 73% between 2009 and 2014 (888 vs. 240, especially for Bluehead Cub, Redlip Shiner, and Crescent Shiner); skewed trophic structure due to the dominance by the omnivorous Bluehead Chub (indicative of nonpoint nutrient enrichment); loss of species and lower than expected percentage of species with multiple age classes along with the skewed trophic structure resulted in the decline in the NCIBI Score and NCIBI Rating in 2014. 2004-2014 -- 22 species known from the site, including 4 species each of darters and suckers; dominant species is the Bluehead Chub; Roanoke Hog Sucker collected in 2004, 2009, and 2014; other imperiled species known from this site was the Riverweed Darter (collected in 2004); no trout have ever collected from this stream although it is supplementally classified as Trout Waters. Recommendation -- based upon the fish community data collected, the biological integrity appears to have declined since 2004. However, consider re -sampling in 2015 to verify its 2014 rating and possibly preventing its placement on the impaired stream's list. Until verified, community should be considered Not Rated; continued basinwide assessment of this site in 2019 to document any potential impacts from changing Ianduse in the watershed. Note: the fish community was re -sampled in 2015 and was rated Good -Fair; 525 fish were collected of which the dominant species was the Bluehead Chub (51%); there was evidence of recent high water; severe bank sloughing was observed; and the specific conductance was 53 µS/cm. Habitats -- although within the Triassic Basin, the substrates were Carolina Slate Belt -like with bedrock shelves, cobble, and gravel; thick growths of Podostemum on the bedrock shelves and in the riffles in the sun -lit areas; shallow, cobble riffles; fairly straight channel; low flow. Water Quality -- specific conductance typical of a watershed that is — 20% in agriculture. 2014 -- most abundant community of any site in the basin (n=668); 20 species known from the site including 8 species of cyprinids and 5 species of darters, but only 1 species of sucker and only 2 Intolerant Species (Riverweed Darter and Roanoke Darter); abundance of Omnivores+Herbivores (56%, Bluehead Chub and Central Stoneroller) skewed the trophic structure and were indicative of nonpoint nutrient runoff. Recommendation -- based upon all the data collected, the stream is supporting its intended uses; continued basinwide assessment of this site in 2019 to document any potential impacts from changing landuse in the watershed is recommended. Habitats -- sand and bedrock substrates; shallow; eroding banks; side snags; large coarse woody debris in mid -channel; one embedded cobble riffle at beginning of the reach; sand and gravel bars. Water Quality -- specific conductance decreased since 2004, elevated, but within the norm for a watershed that is - 40% in agriculture and developed. 2014 -- 6 point decline in the NCIBI Score and an one class NCIBI Rating decline was caused by the loss of fish and one species of sunfish (Warmouth), and a very skewed trophic structure (59% Omnivores+Herbivores, due to the abundance of Bluehead Chub which is an indicator of nonpoint source nutrient runoff); lower than expected score for the Percentage of Species with Multiple age Classes (44% which is often due to the affects of high flows and/or droughts). 1994-2014 -- very diverse community for a stream of its size with 31 species known from the site including 12 species of cyprinids, 4 species of suckers, 3 species of darters, and 1 Intolerant Species (Roanoke Darter); dominant species is the Bluehead Chub; no imperiled species known to inhabit the creek. Recommendation -- based upon all the data collected, there has been a slight decline in the biological integrity of the fish community during the past 10 years; continued basinwide assessment of this site in 2019 to determine if the decline is persistent and to document any potential impacts from changing landuse in the watershed is recommended. Watershed -- almost the entire watershed is in Virginia; drains the southwest corner of Pittsylvania County and a very small portion of northeastern Rockingham County; no municipalities or NPDES dischargers in the watershed; site is - 0.9 mile upstream from the creek's confluence with the Dan River. Habitat -- although within the Triassic Basin, the substrates were Carolina Slate Belt -like with cobble, bedrock, boulder, and gravel; bedrock shelves, riffles, and chutes; straight channel; wide forested riparian zone along the right bank. Landuse -- lowest percentage of its watershed developed than any other fish community site sampled in 2014. Water Quality -- dissolved oxygen and pH elevated due to late afternoon photosynthesis and warm water temperature; specific conductance elevated, but within the norm for a watershed that is - 20% in agriculture. 2014 -- abundant and diverse community with 20 species known from the site, including 8 species of cyprinids and 4 species of darters, but only 1 species of sucker, 1 Intolerant Species (Roanoke Darter), and no piscivores; all other 9 metrics were scored a '5" (i.e., a maximum score for each metric that would be found at regional reference sites). Recommendation -- based upon all the data collected, the stream is supporting its intended uses; continued basinwide assessment of this site in 2019 to document any potential impacts from changing landuse in the watershed is recommended. Note: in May 2009, a fish kill occurred in Cascade Creek approximately 3.1 to 4.1 miles upstream in Virginia between VA 621 and VA 622 as a result of the illegal dumping of waste yeast sludge into the creek. At least 10,000 fish were killed, including two federally endangered Roanoke Logperch. Later that summer, NCWRC staff surveyed the stream in North Carolina collecting - 25 species of fish, but no Roanoke Logperch. Habitat -- sand substrate; primarily sandy runs with side snags; lots of submerged coarse woody debris along the margins and in the mid -channel; undercuts; stick riffles. Water Quality -- slightly elevated specific conductance due to the upstream WWTP discharge and due to the fact that — 15% of its watershed is in agriculture. 2014 -- greatest Percentage of Tolerant Fish of any site in the basin (59%, Redbreast Sunfish, Green Sunfish, Satinfin Shiner, Yellow Bullhead, and Flat Bullhead); slightly skewed trophic structure with two few Omnivores+Herbivores (8%); total number of fish and several diversity metrics (sunfish, suckers, intolerant species) were slightly lower than expected; 19 species known from this site including 5 species of cyprinids, 4 species of darters, and 2 species of suckers. Recommendation -- based upon all the data collected, the stream appears to be supporting its intended uses; continued basinwide assessment of this site in 2019 to document any potential impacts from changing landuse in the watershed is recommended. Habitat -- sand, gravel, cobble, and boulder substrates; evidence of very high water from May 2014 flash floods, severe bank erosion; several coarse woody debris log jams, many of which have been there since the last basinwide cycle; wide riparian zones providing dense shade over the stream; one cobble along with a couple of stick and gravel riffles. Water Quality -- specific conductance stable since 2004 (86 µS/cm in 2004), slightly elevated but within the norm for a watershed that is — 15% in agriculture. 2014 -- the number of fish declined by 34% between 2010 and 2014 (262 vs. 173, especially Redbreast Sunfish); a four point decline in the NCIBI Score and a one class decrease in the NCIBI Rating resulted from the capture of fewer fish, the loss of one species of sucker (V-lip Redhorse), and a slight increase in the Percentage of Omnivores+Herbivores (from 35% to 46% due to the abundance of Spottail Shiner, Eastern Silvery Minnow, Bluehead Chub, Brown Bullhead, and White Catfish); two American Eel shocked, netted, measured (220 and 330 mm TL), and released as part of an ongoing Dominion Power re -introduction project upstream from the dam, only site in the basin from which the species was collected in 2014. 1994-2014 -- the second most speciose site in the basin with 33 species including 9 species of sunfish, 8 species of cyprinids, 5 species of catfish, 3 species of suckers, 2 species of darters, but no Intolerant Species; dominant species is the Redbreast Sunfish and Spottail Shiner; no imperiled species known from this site; community has generally rated Good, except in 2009 when it rated Fair due to lingering affects from the 2008 drought and in 2014 when it rated Good -Fair due to recent high water events; a transition fish community between the Northern Outer Piedmont and the Rolling Coastal Plain. Recommendation -- based upon all the data collected, there has been no consistent, long-term change in the water quality or fish community since 1994; community is strongly influence by flow extremes brought about by droughts and flash floods and close proximity to the reservoir, continued basinwide assessment of this site in 2019 to document any potential impacts from changing landuse in the watershed. Water Quality -- lowest specific conductance of any fish community site in the basin in 2014, stable since 2004 and low for a watershed that is -• 20% in agriculture. 2014 -- the number of fish declined by 46% between 2009 and 2014 (588 vs. 318, especially for Bluehead Chub, Crescent Shiner, and White Shiner); only metric not scoring a "Y was the Number of Sunfish metric ("1", only one species of sunfish, Redbreast Sunfish has ever been collected at this site); a balanced trophic structure accounted for the 4 point increase in the NCIBI Score and a one NCIBI Rating Class increase between 2009 and 2014; highest NCIBI Score and NCIBI Rating of any site in the basin. 2004-2014 -- very abundant and diverse community for the size of the stream, 25 species known from the site, including 5 species each of darters and suckers and 4 Intolerant Species (Cutlip Minnow, Smallmouth Bass, Riverweed Darter, and Roanoke Darter); gradual improvement in the trophic metrics since 2004; dominant species is the Bluehead Chub; imperiled species known from this site include Roanoke Hog Sucker (Significantly Rare, collected in 2004, 2009, and 2014), Riverweed Darter (Special Concern, collected in 2004, 2009, and 2014), Cutlip Minnow (Special Concern, collected in 2004); since assessments began in 2004, no trout have ever collected from this stream although it is supplementally classified as Trout Waters. Water Quality -- specific conductance stable since 2004, elevated but within the norm for a watershed that is — 30% in agriculture. 2014 -- the number offish declined by 46% between 2009 and 2014 and by 63% since 2004 (339 vs. 232 vs 126, especially Fantail Darter); a 14 point decline in the NCIBI Score and two class decrease in the NCIBI Rating resulted from the loss of fish and several key species (Creek Chubsucker, Redbreast Sunfish, Warmouth and Carolina Darter), a skewed trophic structure (38% Omnivores+Herbivores, 62% Insectivores and 0% Piscivores, due to the abundance of Bluehead Chub and Golden Shiner), and a lower than expected Percentage of Species with Multiple age Classes (42%) which is often due to the affects of high flows and/or droughts; community is Not Rated due to the affects of the flow extremes; if rated the community would rate Poor, NCIBI = 30. 2004-2014 -- diverse community for a stream of its size with 21 species known from the site including 3 species of darters, 1 species of sucker, but no Intolerant Species; dominant species is the Fantail Darter; only known imperiled species collected from this site was the Special Concern Species Carolina Darter (collected in 2009); Redbreast Sunfish has not been collected since 2004 (only 2 collected then) and has been displaced by Green Sunfish, a tolerant nonindigenous species that can outcompete other sunfish in Carolina Slate Belt streams; typical of many streams in the Carolina Slate Belt ecoregion, the fish community is subjected to extremely variable flows (very high flows followed by very low flows or vice versa). Recommendation -- as a marginal fish community regional reference site, the fish community in this small stream has never been accurately rated with the NCIBI. The community is negatively affected by the flow extremes and limited avenues for colonization due to the downstream reservoir. Because of these factors, this site should probably be discontinued as a long-term basin monitoring site. Habitat -- 2nd lowest scoring of instream and riparian habitats of any fish community site in the basin (along with Moon Creek); sand and gravel substrate, bedrock at the beginning of the reach; shallow, sandy runs, side snags and undercuts, Fissidens on the bedrock; only riffles were at the bedrock shelves; riparian zones of Oriental Privet; urban debris in the channel and along the banks; low flow. Water Quality -- greatest specific conductance of any fish community site in the basin, always extremely elevated and stemming from the upstream WWTP discharge and the nonpoint source runoff from the watershed which is — 55% developed; chlorine smell; Instream Waste Concentration is 90%. 2014 -- no change in the number of fish collected between 2004 and 2014 (392 vs. 405); a 4 point increase in the NCIBI Score and a one rating class improvement was the result of increased metric scores related to a more balanced trophic structure (20% Omnivores+Herbivores and 80% Insectivores) in 2014 than in 2004. 1994-2014 -- not a very diverse community for a stream of this size with only 15 species known from the site including just one species of darter and an absence of suckers and Intolerant Species; number of species and other diversity metrics are consistently lower than expected; dominant species is the Swallowtail Shiner and Spottail Shiner; no imperiled species known from the site. Recommendation -- based upon the fish community data collected, the biological integrity appears to have declined. However, consider re -sampling in 2015 to verify its 2014 rating and possibly preventing its placement on the impaired stream's list. Until verified, community should be considered Not Rated; continued basinwide assessment of this site in 2019 to document any potential impacts from changing landuse in the watershed. Water Quality -- specific conductance has increased since 1994, elevated but within the norm for a watershed that is — 35% in agriculture and developed. 2014 -- least abundant community of any site in the basin (n=78); lower than expected metric scores for fish abundance, diversity of suckers and darters, an absence of suckers, and a very low Percentage of Species with Multiple age Classes (31 %) which is often due to the affects of high flows and/or droughts, but this percentage has been unexplainably low for this community during each monitoring cycle, range 29%-39%). 1994-2014 -- 25 species known from the site including 6 species of sunfish, but only 1 species each of sucker and darter and no Intolerant Species; dominant species is the Bluegill (1994 and 2004) and Pirate Perch (2014); trophic metrics stable; no imperiled species known from this site; a transition stream and fish community between the Northern Outer Piedmont and the Rolling Coastal Plain. Recommendation -- based upon all the data collected, there has been no consistent long-term change in the fish community since 1994; continued basinwide assessment of this site in 2019 to document any potential impacts from changing landuse in the watershed. Habitats -- sand, gravel, and bedrock outcrops substrates; sandy and gravelly runs; shallow snags; boulder bedrock pools with no big fish inhabiting them; wide forested riparian zone on the left with tall bluff; evidence of recent high water. Water Quality -- specific conductance stable since 2004, within the norm for a watershed that is — 25% in agriculture. 2014 -- the number of fish declined by 71 % between 2009 and 2014 (746 vs. 214, especially for Bluehead Chub, Redlip Shiner, Crescent Shiner, and Redbreast Sunfish); least speciose community of any site in the basin; lowest NCIBI Score and NCIBI Rating of any site in the basin; very skewed trophic structure due to the dominance by the omnivorous Bluehead Chub (indicative of nonpoint nutrient enrichment); loss of fish and several species, along with the very skewed trophic structure resulted in the decline in the NCIBI Score and NCIBI Rating in 2014. 2004-2014 -- 20 species known from the site, including 4 species of suckers, but just 2 species of sunfish and darters; darters inexplicably absent from the upper watershed include Johnny Darter, Glassy Darter, Riverweed Darter, and Chainback Darter; dominant species is the Bluehead Chub; Roanoke Hog Sucker collected in 2004, 2009, and 2014, no other imperiled species known from the site. Recommendation -- based upon the fish community data collected, the biological integrity appears to have declined since 2004. However, consider re -sampling in 2015 to verify its 2014 rating and possibly preventing its placement on the impaired stream's list. Until verified, community should be considered Not Rated; continued basinwide assessment of this site in 2019 to document any potential impacts from changing landuse in the watershed. Note 1: the site is 2.6 miles upstream from Sheppard's Mill dam which may be affecting the diversity of sunfish and darters as well as the re -colonization of the stream following droughts or floods. Note 2: the fish community was re -sampled in 2015 and was rated Good -Fair; 469 fish were collected of which the dominant species was the Bluehead Chub (32%); two specimens of Bigeye Jumprock, a State Threatened Species, were collected and released; there was evidence of recent high water with large coarse woody debris dams across the channel; and the specific conductance was 64 pS/cm.
