Habitat -- Coastal Plain -like habitats but within the Piedmont; lower to moderate quality habitats (using Piedmont habitat criteria; if using Coastal Plain habitat criteria score = 74 in 2015), has ranged from 61 to 80 since 2000 (no data were collected in 1995); Coastal Plain -like with extensive wetlands within the right riparian zone; deadfalls and coarse submerged woody debris; Fissidens. Water Quality -- lowest specific conductance of any site in the Neuse Piedmont in 2015, has ranged from 53 pS/cm to 77 pS/cm since 2000. 2015 -- more indicative of some Coastal Plain streams with low productivity, few fish were collected (n = 103), the fewest from any site in the Neuse Piedmont in 2015 and in 2010; a 10-point decline in the NCIBI Score and one NCIBI Rating class decrease (to a low Fair) were attributed to a slightly lower than expected number of species, the absence of at least two species of sunfish and of any Intolerant Species, and a high Percentage of Insectivores (92%); only site in the Neuse Piedmont where Dusky Shiner, Tadpole Madtom, and Tessellated Darter were collected. 2005-2015 -- community shares faunal similarities with some Coastal Plain communities (e.g., Dusky Shiner, Comely Shiner, Eastern Mudminnow, Tadpole Madtom, Mud Sunfish, Bluespotted Sunfish, and Sawcheek Darter); a very speciose community of 30 species, including 8 species each of sunfish, 7 species of cyprinids, 5 species of darters, 4 Intolerant Species (Pinewoods Shiner, Sawcheek Darter, Roanoke Darter, and Chainback Darter), but only 1 species of sucker (Creek Chubsucker); dominant species are Redbreast Sunfish (1995, 2000, and 2005), Dusky Shiner (2000 and 2015), and Tessellated Darter (2010); the number of fish being collected is consistently low (range 73 - 181), as at other transitional sites, since 2000 the Percentage of Omnivores+Herbivores has been very low (1 % to 5%) and the Percentage of Insectivores was relatively high (85% to 92%) which resulted in lower than expected trophic metric scores and overall NCIBI Scores and NCIBI Ratings during these four cycles. Recommendation -- continue basinwide monitoring of this site in 2020 to document suburbanization of the watershed. This site will be re -sampled in 2016 to verify its 2015 rating. Habitats -- moderate quality habitats, has ranged from 73 to 79 since 2000; deep pool at end of the reach downstream of the bridge; infrequent, shallow cobble and gravel riffles; runs and side snags; Podostemum common. Water Quality -- specific conductance elevated as a result of the upstream W WTP discharge and a highly developed watershed, has ranged from 190 pS/cm to 265 pS/cm since 2000 with the highest measurement recorded in 2015. 2015 -- a slight decrease in the number of fish collected and the loss of two species of suckers was offset by the greater percentage of Omnivores+Herbivores such that the NCIBI Score and NCIBI Rating did not change. 2000-2015 -- despite its urbanized watershed, a diverse community of 29 species are known from this site, including 9 species of sunfish, 8 species of cyprinids, 4 species of suckers, 3 species of darters, and 2 Intolerant Species (Pinewoods Shiner and Roanoke Darter); dominant species are Swallowtail Shiner (2000), Bluegill and Redbreast Sunfish (2005), and Fantail Darter (2010 & 2015); site has rated Excellent since 2000 with NCIBI Scores of either 54 or 58. Recommendation -- continue monitoring of this basinwide site in 2020 to determine any impacts from the WWTP and the continued urbanization of its watershed. Habitat -- high quality habitats, has ranged from 81 to 86 since 2000 (no data were collected in 1990 or 1995); slick rocks covered with periphyton, Fissidens present, and a bluegreen algal film; runs, side snags, and riffles. Water Quality -- low flow; specific conductance low for an eastern Piedmont stream, ranging from 59 pS/cm to 79 pS/cm since 1990. 2015 -- 1 of only 2 sites (the other being North Flat River) where four species of darters were present; a 6-point decline in the NCIBI Score and one NCIBI Rating class decrease were attributed to the absence of one or more species of suckers (White Sucker, Creek Chubsucker, Northern Hog Sucker, V-Lip Redhorse, and Blacktip Jumprock) and the absences of the intolerant Pinewoods Shiner and the piscivorous Largemouth Bass; however, none of these metric declines are likely indicative of significant changes in water quality. 1990-2015 -- a very speciose community with 34 species known from the site, including 9 species of cyprinids, 7 species of sunfish, 6 species of suckers, 4 species of darters, and 3 Intolerant Species (Pinewoods Shiner, Roanoke Darter, and Chainback Darter); dominant species are the Bluehead Chub and White Shiner; several metrics are extremely stable with every sampling effort represented by 4 species of darters, 4 or 5 species of sunfish, 2 or 3 Intolerant Species, 32% Omnivores+Herbivores, and 70% Insectivores; fish community has been rated Excellent in 4 of the 5 monitoring cycles. Recommendation -- continue basinwide monitoring of this regional reference site in 2020 to document its support of its supplemental classification as Outstanding Resource Waters in the face of the potential suburbanization of its watershed. Habitat -- lowest quality habitats of any Neuse Piedmont or Coastal Plain stream in 2015, has ranged from 34 to 49 since 1995; deeply entrenched (canyon -like) and channelized; one continuous run of varying depths; some snags; urban debris throughout the channel; rust -colored iron bacteria along the edges from the groundwater seepage. Water Quality -- second greatest specific conductance of any site in the Neuse Piedmont in 2015, ranging from 167 pS/cm to 269 pS/cm since 1995 with the greatest measurement recorded in 2015 indicative of stormwater runoff from a highly urbanized and impervious watershed; dissolved oxygen in 2015 was at 125% of saturation. 2015 -- fewest species (n = 7) collected from any site in the Neuse Piedmont in 2015; darters absent and only one species of sunfish (tolerant Redbreast Sunfish) was present; a very abundant community, but 97% of all fish were Swallowtail Shiner (87%) and Redbreast Sunfish (10%); two intolerant Pinewoods Shiner were collected, but they were probably downstream migrants from the Eno or Flat rivers; a very altered trophic structure was present with 99% Insectivores and only 1% Omnivores+Herbivores; lowest NCIBI Score and NCIBI Rating (along with Walnut Creek at SR 2544, Wake County) of any site in the Neuse Piedmont in 2015. 1995-2015 -- number of fish collected is variable with > 600 collected in 1995 and 2015, but only 81 in 2005; only 12 species known from the site, darters are absent; dominant species is Swallowtail Shiner; low species richness and skewed trophic structure are the norm. Recommendation -- because of its severely degraded habitat, water quality, and fish community, monitoring needs to be conducted only once every 10 years until more stringent stormwater controls are implemented throughout the watershed. Habitats -- moderate quality instream and riparian habitats, has ranged from 66 to 81 since 2000; slick and eroding clay banks and instream deposits of soft sediments; long, deep pool at the end of the reach; cobble and boulder rifles at the old mill site. Water Quality -- specific conductance within the norm for an eastern Piedmont stream, relatively stable since 2000, ranging from 73 pS/cm to 83 pS/cm (in 2000); water temperature in 2015 was colder than that in nearby streams due to the upstream dam releases. 2015 -- a slight 2-point difference in the NCIBI Score was due to a skewed trophic structure (from 33% in 2010 to 40% in 2015 for Omnivores+Herbivores and from 84% in 2010 to 60% in 2015 for Insectivores). 2000-2015 -- 27 species known from the site, including 8 species of sunfish, 6 species of cyprinids, 4 species each of darters and suckers, and 3 Intolerant Species (Pinewoods Shiner, Roanoke Darter, and Chainback Darter); dominant species vary among Swallowtail Shiner (2000) to Bluehead Chub (2005 and 2015) to Redbreast Sunfish (2010); several metrics are stable with every sampling effort represented by 17 or 18 species, 3 or 4 species of darters, 4 or 6 species of sunfish, and 2 or 3 Intolerant Species; there has been a 10-point decline in the NCIBI score between 2005 and 2015. Recommendation -- continue basinwide monitoring of this site in 2020 to determine if the decline in the biological integrity of the community is attributable to altered hydrology, declining water quality, or both factors. Water Quality -- specific conductance within the norm for an eastern Piedmont stream, was 64 pS/cm in 2004. 2015 -- a very diverse community, the most species (n=26) collected at any site in the Neuse Piedmont in 2015, including 5 species of sunfish and 4 species of suckers; almost the same number of fish collected in 2015 as in 2004 (n = 428 and 421, respectively); only metric not scoring a maximum of "5" was the Number of Intolerant Species (n = 1, score = "3" ); a 6 point increase in the NCIBI Score and one NCIBI Rating class increase were due to the collection of an additional species of darter (Glassy Darter) and an Intolerant Species (Pinewoods Shiner), and a greater percentage of species with multiple age classes in 2015 than in 2004 (54% vs. 44%, respectively); highest NCIBI Score and NCIBI Rating (along with South Fork Little River) of any site in the Neuse Piedmont in 2015. 2004 & 2015 -- a very diverse community with 32 species known from the site, including 8 species each of cyprinids and sunfish, 4 species of suckers, and 3 species of darters; high taxa richness may be due in part to the site's proximity to the reservoir with several species migrating to and from the reservoir (e.g., Yellow Perch, White Perch, Gizzard Shad, Notchlip Redhorse, V-Lip Redhorse, and Bluegill). Habitats -- has ranged from 55 to 69 since 2005; riffles created by sticks in the current; snags and deadfalls; bank erosion moderate; wide riparian zones comprised primarily of exotic vegetation (Oriental Privet and Japanese Honeysuckle). Water Quality -- specific conductance within the norm for an eastern Neuse Piedmont stream, stable, and ranging from 82 pS/cm to 88 pS/cm during the past three monitoring cycles. 2015 -- a 12-point decline in the NCIBI Score and two NCIBI Rating class decrease were attributed to the lower than expected number of fish (n = 216 vs. 280 in 2010), the loss of one species of sucker (Notchlip Redhorse), and a skewed trophic structure (8% Omnivores+Herbivores, 92% Insectivores, and 0.5% Piscivores); one male American Shad (470 mm TL) netted and release, the first ever collected by DW R's fish community monitoring program. 2005-2015 -- community shares faunal similarities with some Coastal Plain communities (e.g., Sea Lamprey, Flier, and Yellow Perch); a very speciose community of 33 species, including 9 species each of cyprinids and of sunfish, 4 species of darters, 3 species of suckers, and 2 Intolerant Species (Pinewoods Shiner and Roanoke Darter); dominant species are Redbreast Sunfish (2005, 2010), White Shiner (2010), and Johnny Darter/Tessellated Darter Intergrades (2015); several metrics have been stable (3 species of darters, 2 or 3 species of suckers, and - 25% Tolerant Fish); as at other ecotonal (transitional) sites, in 2005 and 2015 the Percentage of Omnivores+Herbivores was very low (2% and 8%) and the Percentage of Insectivores was high (91 % and 92%) which resulted in lower than expected trophic metric scores and overall NCIBI Scores and NCIBI Ratings during those two cycles. Water Quality -- second lowest specific conductance of any site in the Piedmont in 2015, has ranged from 67 pS/cm to 73 pS/cm since 2004. 2015 -- no change in the NCIBI Score or NCIBI Rating between 2010 and 2015, but there was a slight decline in the number of fish (from 252 to 187) and in the species richness of sunfish (from 6 species to 3 species due to the absence of Mud Sunfish, Bluespotted Sunfish, and Green Sunfish) which was offset by a lower Percentage of Tolerant Fish (from 55% to 35%); as at other transitional sites, the Percentage of Omnivores+Herbivores was very low (9%) and the Percentage of Insectivores was high (88%), often resulting in an skewed trophic structure; the only Piedmont site where Sawcheek Darter was collected. 2004-2015 -- community shares strong faunal similarities with Coastal Plain fish communities, 23 species are known from the site, including 9 species of sunfish, 3 species each of cyprinids and darters, 2 Intolerant Species (Roanoke Darter and Sawcheek Darter), and 1 species of suckers; dominant species have been Bluegill (2004), Eastern Mosquitofish (2010), and Redbreast Sunfish (2015); number of species and number of fish (from 283 to 252 to 187) appears to be gradually declining, although trophic metrics are stable at - 7% Omnivores+Herbivores and - 88% Insectivores; no change in the NCIBI Rating since 2004. Recommendation -- continue monitoring this transitional ecoregion and basinwide site in 2020 prior to impoundment of the river by the proposed downstream Little River Reservoir and to determine any impacts from changes in landuse within its watershed. Water Quality -- specific conductance within the norm for an eastern Neuse Piedmont stream, has ranged from 65 pS/cm to 82 pS/cm since 1995 (data were not collected in 1991). 2015 -- few fish present (n = 158; 468 were collected in 2010); an 8-point decline in the NCIBI Score and one NCIBI Rating class decrease (to a low Good -Fair) were attributed to the lower than expected number of fish, the absence of suckers and the intolerant Roanoke Darter, a relatively high Percentage of Tolerant Fish (47%, primarily Satinfin Shiner and Redbreast Sunfish), and a very low percentage of species with multiple age classes (only 33%; 11 of the 21 species were represented by only 1 or 2 fish, indicative of a loss of age classes either due to drought or high flows). 1991-2015 -- community shares faunal similarities with some Coastal Plain communities (e.g., Bluespotted Sunfish, Sea Lamprey, and Comely Shiner), a very speciose community with 32 species, including 9 species of cyprinids, 7 species of sunfish, 4 species of darters, 3 Intolerant Species (Pinewoods Shiner, Roanoke Darter, and Chainback Darter), and 2 species of suckers; dominant species are Redbreast Sunfish (1991, 2010), Bluehead Chub (1995), Swallowtail Shiner and Tessellated Darter (2000), White Shiner (2005), and Satinfin Shiner (2015); as at other transitional sites, the Percentage of Omnivores+Herbivores was very low (6%) and the Percentage of Insectivores was high (89%), in 1991 and 1995 the Percentage of Omnivores+Herbivores was (23%) and the Percentage of Insectivores was (69%); since 2005 the NCIBI Score has declined by 14-points and the NCIBI Rating has declined two rating classes from Excellent to Good -Fair, suggesting a decline in water quality. Water Quality -- a detectable chlorine odor from the WWTP effluent; greatest specific conductance of any site in the Neuse Piedmont in 2015, has ranged from 250 pS/cm to 320 pS/cm since 2004. 2015 -- number of fish collected was very low (n = 145) and the Percentage of Tolerant Fish was relatively high (50%, primarily Eastern Mosquitofish, Redbreast Sunfish, Satinfin Shiner, and Flat Bullhead); an 8-point increase in the NCIBI Score and a one NCIBI Rating Class increase resulted from the collection of an additional species of darter (Glassy Darter), a very slight decrease in the Percentage of Insectivores (from 91 % to 90% between 2011 and 2015), and a greater percentage of species with multiple age classes (65% in 2015 vs. 48% in 2011); as at other transitional sites, the Percentage of Omnivores+Herbivores was very low (7%) and the Percentage of Insectivores was high (90%); 11 large specimens (320-453 mm TL) of Notchlip Redhorse and V-lip Redhorse were encountered. 2004-2015 -- community shares faunal similarities with Coastal Plain and Piedmont fish communities; a very speciose community with 32 species known from the site, including 10 species of sunfish, 7 species of cyprinids, 4 species of darters, 3 species of suckers, and 3 Intolerant Species (Chainback Darter which has not been collected since 2004 and Pinewoods Shiner and Roanoke Darter); dominant species are the tolerant Redbreast Sunfish (2004-2011) and the tolerant Eastern Mosquitofish (2015); a consistently low number of fish collected (n = 121-231) along with a high percentage of them being Tolerant Fish (34%-50%), and a skewed trophic structure (- 6% Omnivores+Herbivores and - 90% Insectivores); NCIBI Scores have varied from 40 to 54 with NCIBI Ratings ranging from a low Good -Fair to a low Excellent. Water Quality -- except for 2005 (27 pS/cm), specific conductance has been relatively stable since 1991 ranging from 72 pS/cm to 96 pS/cm. 2015 -- fewest species collected since 1996; suckers absent again, only one species of sucker is known from this site, V-lip Redhorse, and it is very rare, just 2 collected since 1991 (1 specimen each in 2000 and 2005); a 6-point decline in the NCIBI Score and one NCIBI Rating class decrease were attributed to the absence of one species of darter (Chainback Darter or Glassy Darter), the absence of two or more species of sunfish (except for Bluegill and Redbreast Sunfish all other species are rare at this site), and the absences of the intolerant Chainback Darter; none of these metric declines are considered to be significant long-term declines in water quality. 1991-2015 -- community shares faunal similarities with Coastal Plain and Piedmont fish communities; a very speciose community with 36 species known from the site (the most of any basinwide site in the Piedmont), including 11 species of sunfish, 7 species of cyprinids, 5 species of catfish, 4 species of darters, and 3 Intolerant Species (Pinewoods Shiner, Roanoke Darter, and Chainback Darter); dominant species are White Shiner (1991, 1995, 2010, and 2015), Bluegill (1995 and 2005), and Roanoke Darter (1996 and 2000); several metrics are very stable (Percentage of Tolerant Fish = 8%; Percentage of Omnivores+Herbivores = 10%, and Percentage of Insectivores = 86%); no substantial change in the biological integrity or water quality of this stream. Recommendation -- continue basinwide monitoring of this site in 2020 to document any change in its community in the face of the potential suburbanization of its watershed; with consistently high quality instream and riparian habitats, a fish community with 6 out of 7 Excellent ratings since 1991, and as a tributary to a water supply reservoir, this stream should be given priority for reclassification to High Quality Waters. Habitats -- lower quality instream habitats, has ranged from 47 to 61 since 2005 (no data were collected in 1995); very shallow with an abundance of periphyton; clay banks; sandy and gravelly runs; some side snags; no deep pools; beaver -impounded floodplains; fairly open canopy, no instream coarse woody debris. Water Quality -- low flow; specific conductance during the last three cycles has ranged from 71 pS/cm to 80 pS/cm (data were not recorded in 1995). 2015 -- fewest fish ever collected at this site (n=209); only 1 species of darter and no Intolerant Species collected; high percentage of diseased fish (2.9%, popeye disease in Bluegill caused by a nematode infection); a 4-point decline in the NCIBI Score, but not the NCIBI Rating was due to declines in the number of fish, number of species of darters and Intolerant Species collected, and an elevated percentage of diseased fish which were offset by a more balanced trophic structure and by a greater percentage of the species with multiple ages classes in 2015 than in 2010. 1995-2015 - a speciose community for the size of the stream, 28 species are known form the site, including 9 species of cyprinids, 6 species of sunfish, 3 species each of suckers and darters, 2 Intolerant Species (Pinewoods Shiner and Roanoke Darter), and several migrants from the reservoir (e.g., Yellow Perch and White Perch); dominant species are White Shiner (1995), Bluehead Chub (1995, 2005, 2015), Swallowtail Shiner (2005), and Spottail Shiner (2010); community has rated Good since 2005; no substantial change in the biological integrity or water quality of this stream during the past three cycles. Recommendation -- continue basinwide monitoring of this site in 2020 to document potential suburbanization of its watershed. Habitat -- second highest quality habitats of any of the sites in the Neuse Piedmont in 2015; has ranged from 83 to 92 since 1999; same as in previous cycles -- a typical high quality Carolina Slate Belt -type stream with angular rocks, slick with periphyton, riffles, bedrock shelves, runs, pools, undercuts, and snags; Fissidens present; right riparian zone logged within the past few years; old mill site at the end of the reach. Water Quality -- low flow; specific conductance within the norm for an eastern Neuse Piedmont stream, ranging from 72 pS/cm to 92 pS/cm, except during 2005 when it was measured at 56 pS/cm. 2015 -- most fish (n = 770) collected from any site in the Neuse Piedmont in 2015, four species of darters present, low Percentage of Tolerant Fish (7%), but a high Percentage of Omnivores+Herbivores (65%, Bluehead Chub); the 10-point decline in the NCIBI Score and the decline in two NCIBI Rating classes were due primarily to the very skewed and shift in trophic structure between 2010 and 2015 (from 32% to 65% Omn ivores+ Herbivores and from 68% to 35% Insectivores); the changes in the latter two metrics, along with the increase in abundance of Bluehead Chub and the periphyton-slick substrate, were indicative of some nutrient enrichment from nonpoint source runoff. 1999-2015 -- overall an abundant and diverse community, but one whose fish abundance appears to gradually increasing since 2005 (from 485 to 675 to 770) while its species richness appears to be gradually declining -- signs of nutrient enrichment and a change in water quality; 29 species are known from the site, including 7 species each of cyprinids and sunfish, 5 species of suckers, 4 species of darters, and 3 Intolerant Species (Pinewoods Shiner, Roanoke Darter, a and Chainback Darter); dominant species are the Bluehead Chub (1999-2015) and White Shiner (1999, 2000, 2010); there has been a 12-point decline in the NCIBI Score between 2000 and 2015. Recommendation -- continue basinwide monitoring of this site in 2020 to document the increasing development of the watershed and to determine if the decline in the NCIBI Rating is permanent or if it was an aberrant sample possibly due to the low flow conditions (confining the fish to a smaller area) because prior to 2015, the ratings have varied between Good and Excellent. Water Quality -- low flow; specific conductance has ranged from 72 pS/cm to 96 pS/cm and continued to be within the norm for an eastern Piedmont stream. 2015 -- a slight decline in the number of species of darters, suckers, and Intolerant Species (one less species of each) were offset by a slightly more balanced trophic structure in 2015 than in 2010; only site in the Neuse Piedmont from which Swallowtail Shiner (a wide -spread species) was not collected; no changes in the NCIBI Score or NCIBI Rating. 2000-2015 -- 25 species known from the site, including 6 species of cyprinids, 5 species of sunfish, 4 species of suckers, 3 species of darters (although the Fantail Darter was absent), the endemic Roanoke Bass, and 3 Intolerant Species (Pinewoods Shiner, Roanoke Darter, and Chainback Darter); dominant species has consistently been the Bluehead Chub; no substantial change in the biological integrity or water quality of this stream which has consistently rated Good since 2000; metrics are stable with every sampling effort represented by 2 or 3 species of darters, 4 species of sunfish, 44% Omnivores+Herbivores, and 54% Insectivores, the latter two metrics, along with the periphyton-slick substrate, consistently showing some nutrient enrichment from nonpoint source runoff. Water Quality-- specific conductance has been > 100 pS/cm during the past three monitoring periods, indicative of an increasingly urbanized watershed; has ranged from 74 pS/cm to 116 pS/cm since 1995. 2015 -- a 4-point decline in the NCIBI Score and one NCIBI Rating class decrease were attributed to the lower than expected total species richness and the absence of darters and suckers. 1995-2015 -- 25 species are known from the site, including 7 species of cyprinids, 5 species of sunfish, 4 species of suckers, 2 species of darters, but no Intolerant Species; dominant species are Bluegill and Bluehead Chub (1995) and White Shiner (2005-2011), and Speckled Killifish (2015); three species of suckers have not been collected since 2005 (Creek Chubsucker) or 2010 (Notchlip Redhorse and V-Lip Redhorse); the occurrence and abundance of the piscivorous, anadromous American Eel which, in part, affects the NCIBI Scores and NCIBI Ratings, along with the absence of other species (Pinewoods Shiner and Roanoke Darter), is negatively influenced by the continued existence of the Milburnie Dam downstream on the Neuse River (slated for possible removal in the near future); the Percentage of Tolerant Fish seems to be gradually increasing from 14% in 1995 to 30% in 2015, but the trophic metrics (Percentage of Omnivores+Herbivores and Percentage of Insectivores) have been relatively stable; NCIBI Scores and Ratings have ranged from Good -Fair to Excellent since 1995. Water Quality -- specific conductance stable, has ranged from 67 pS/cm to 77 pS/cm during the past four cycles (a lower value - 52 pS/cm) was recorded in 1995) and has been within the norm for an eastern Piedmont stream. 2015 -- as in years past an abundant community (n=354), but with a very low percentage of species with multiple age classes (only 31 %; 8 of the 16 species were represented by only 1 or 2 fish, indicative of a loss of age classes either due to drought or high flows); many Age 1 Bluehead Chub, White Shiner, and Swallowtail Shiner which also indicated a re -populating of the stream, these three species represented 86% of all the fish collected. 1995-2015 -- for its size stream, a very speciose fish community with 25 species known from this site, including 8 species of sunfish, 6 species of cyprinids, 2 species each of suckers and darters, but no Intolerant Species; Redfin Pickerel, Northern Hog Sucker, Eastern Mosquitofish, and Black Crappie have not been collected since 1995; dominant species are the White Shiner (2000, 2010, and 2015) and Bluehead Chub (1995 and 2005); no substantial changes in the biological integrity or water quality of this stream since 2000. Water Quality -- despite the increasingly developed watershed and the upstream discharger, the specific conductance has been very stable, ranging from 90 pS/cm to 104 pS/cm. 2015 -- second most species (n = 24) collected at any site in the Neuse Piedmont in 2015; a 6-point decline in the NCIBI Score and one NCIBI Rating class decrease were attributed to the loss of two species of suckers (Northern Hog Sucker and Notchlip Redhorse) and the very high Percentage of Tolerant Fish (60%, primarily Satinfin Shiner and Green Sunfish). 1995-2015 -- community shares some faunal similarities with Coastal Plain fish communities (e.g. Flier, Eastern Mudminnow, Tadpole Madtom, Yellow Perch, and Bluespotted Sunfish); a very speciose community with 35 species known from the site (the second most of any basinwide site in the Neuse Piedmont), including 10 species of sunfish, 7 species of catfish, 6 species of cyprinids, 3 species each of darters and suckers, but just 1 Intolerant Species (Chainback Darter; Pinewood Shiner and and Roanoke Darter are absent); the absence of some species (e.g., Pinewoods Shiner and Roanoke Darter) are due in part to the continued existence of the Milburnie Dam (slated for possible removal in the near future) downstream on the Neuse River; the site's proximity to the river may also influence the community's overall diversity and abundance (i.e. readily available avenues for recolonization following droughts and other perturbations and seasonal migrations to and from the river); dominant species are Bluehead Chub (1995), Eastern Mosquitofish (2005), Swallowtail Shiner (2000 and 2010), and Satinfin Shiner (2015); since 1995, the dominance of Bluehead Chub has been steadily decreasing (from 45% in 1995 to 2% in 2015), while the dominance of the tolerant Satinfin Shiner has been steadily increasing (from 5% to 50%), perhaps indicating a shift from coarse gravel to a finer sand substrate; since 2005 the trophic structure has been skewed, being dominated more by Insectivores (92%) and less by Omnivores+Herbivores (- 7%); NCIBI Scores and NCIBI Rating have ranged from 36 (Fair) to 56 (Excellent). Recommendation -- continue basinwide monitoring of this site in 2020 to document the watershed's increasing urbanization. Habitats -- moderate quality habitats, range 59 to 66 since 2000; same as in 2005 and 2010 -- two different habitat zones: above the bridge - high quality Carolina Slate Belt -type stream with angular rocks, riffles, Podostemum; thick and nuisance levels of periphyton abundant; below the bridge - sandy runs and pools with some severely entrenched banks below the bridge. Water Quality -- low flow; specific conductance has ranged from 69 pS/cm to 104 pS/cm during the last four cycles and has been within the norm for an eastern Piedmont stream. 2015 -- a 2-point difference in the NCIBI Score was due to the absence of the intolerant Chainback Darter which is very rare at this site, only 1 specimen has been collected since 2000; skewed trophic metrics (39% Omnivores+Herbivores and 60% Insectivores) again indicated an excess of nutrients, and filamentous algae and periphyton are plentiful in the stream. 2000-2015 -- a very speciose fish community given the size of the stream, 29 species are known from the site including 9 species of cyprinids, 8 species of sunfish, 3 species each of suckers and darters, and 3 Intolerant Species (Pinewoods Shiner, Roanoke Darter, and Chainback Darter); several metrics are stable with every sampling effort represented by 2 or 3 species of darters, 4-6 species of sunfish, 1 or 2 species of suckers, 42% Omnivores+Herbivores, and 58% Insectivores, the latter two metrics, along with the dominance by Bluehead Chub and the periphyton-slick substrate, are indicative of nutrient enrichment from nonpoint source runoff; consistently dominant species is the Bluehead Chub; site has rated Good since 2000; no substantial change in the biological integrity or water quality of this stream. Recommendation -- continue basinwide monitoring of this site in 2020 to docume the potential suburbanization of the watershed. Water Quality -- specific conductance has ranged from 78 pS/cm in 1999 to 140 pS/cm in 2010; since 2000 measurements have been >_ 130 pS/cm and are indicative of stormwater runoff from an increasingly urbanized and developed watershed. 2015 -- lower than expected total abundance and species richness including suckers and darters; high percentage of diseased fish (4.2%, popeye disease in Bluegill caused by a nematode infection); as in all previous cycles, there was a very skewed trophic structure with an almost complete absence of Omnivores+Herbivores and an abundance of Insectivores (primarily sunfish, Eastern Mosquitofish, and Swallowtail Shiner). 1995-2015 -- 25 species are known from the site, including 8 species of sunfish, 2 species of suckers, but only 1 species of darter; the wide -spread Bluehead Chub, Satinfin Shiner, and Intolerant Species are absent; two-thirds of all fish collected since 1995 have been sunfish, typical of a stressed fish community in an urban stream and one that is in close proximity to a reservoir; the dominant species from 1995-2000 and 2015 was Bluegill and in 2010 it was the Swallowtail Shiner; since 1995, 8 out of the 13 samples have rated Fair or Poor. Frequently observed in urban streams with degraded water quality, there is am absence or a decrease in the abundance of the omnivorous Bluehead Chub, there is an absence of Intolerant Species, low diversities of darters and suckers, and the community becomes dominated by insectivores and by tolerant species such as the Redbreast Sunfish, ultimately leading to depressed NCIBI metric scores and ratings compared to regional reference sites. Water Quality -- a detectable odor of chlorine from the WWTP effluent; specific conductance elevated from the effluent and has ranged from 97 pS/cm in 2005 to 139 pS/cm in 2015. 2015 -- second fewest fish (n = 111) collected from any site in the Neuse Piedmont in 2015, 628 fish were collected in 2010; a 6-point decline in the NCIBI Score and one NCIBI Rating class decrease were attributed to the lower than expected total species richness, fewer fish, the loss of two species of intolerant darters (Roanoke Darter and Chainback Darter), and the loss of three species of sunfish (Warmouth, Redear Sunfish, and Largemouth Bass); collectively these metric decreases and the visible appearance of the site indicated that very high water might have scoured out the stream and re -structured the fish community, in fact between late December 2014 and mid -January 2015 there were two very high flow events (e.g., Middle Creek near Clayton was > 2,500 cfs in one event and - 2,000 cfs in the second event while the median flow was - 75 cfs). 2005-2015 -- 23 species are known from the site, including 7 species of sunfish, 6 species of cyprinids, 3 species of darters, 3 Intolerant Species (Pinewoods Shiner, Roanoke Darter, and Chainback Darter), and 2 species of sucker; dominant species are Bluehead Chub (2005) and Redbreast Sunfish (2010 and 2015); community appears to have shifted since 2005 from Bluehead Chub, White Shiner, and Swallowtail Shiner (66% to 42% to 16%) to Redbreast Sunfish (11 % to 38% to 35%) with the the Percentage of Tolerant Fish increasing from 12% to 38% to 43%. Recommendation -- continue basinwide monitoring of this site in 2020 to continue document impacts from the expansion of the WWTP discharge from 1 MGD to 6 MGD and the increasing suburbanization of the watershed. Water Quality -- elevated specific conductance due to upstream discharger, nonpoint runoff, and stormwater runoff; has increased dramatically during the past three cycles from 95 pS/cm to 207 pS/cm, was 120 pS/cm and 144 pS/cm in 1995 and 2000, respectively. 2015 -- although only 422 fish were collected in 2015 in contrast to 1,284 collected in 2010, the community was still an extremely abundant fish community for such a small stream; the abundance of Bluehead Chub and periphyton and the altered trophic structure (62% Omnivores+Herbivores and 38% Insectivores) indicated point and nonpoint sources nutrient enrichment; 12 large male and female Notchlip Redhorse (420-560 mm TL) were collected. 1995-2015 -- very speciose community for the small stream size, 28 species are known from the site, including 7 species each of cyprinids and sunfish and 3 species each of suckers and darters, but just 1 Intolerant Species (Pinewoods Shiner and Chainback Darter have not been collected in this stream); the intolerant Roanoke Darter has not been collected since 1995 and other widespread species such as Margined Madtom and Satinfin Shiner have not been collected since 2000; the high taxa richness may be due in part to the site's proximity to the reservoir with several species migrating to and from the reservoir (e.g., Yellow Perch, Spottail Shiner, and Notchlip Redhorse); dominant species are the Bluehead Chub (1995-2015) and White Shiner (1995-2005); a very productive stream with the number of fish being collected ranging from 422 to 1,284; NCIBI Score has declined by 10-points since 2000 and the community has rated Good -Fair since 2010. Water Quality -- specific conductance elevated due to nonpoint and stormwater runoff from a highly urbanized and impervious watershed. 2015 -- suckers and Intolerant Species absent; very skewed trophic structure (96% Insectivores and 2% Omnivores+Herbivores); high percentage of diseased fish (3.1 %, popeye disease in Bluegill caused by a nematode infection). 2010 & 2015 -- 23 species known from the site, including 6 species of sunfish, 7 species of cyprinids, but just 1 species each of suckers and darters, and no Intolerant Species; skewed trophic structure, and high incidence of disease in Bluegill. Frequently observed in urban streams with degraded water quality, there is am absence or a decrease in the abundance of the omnivorous Bluehead Chub, there is an absence of Intolerant Species, low diversities of darters and suckers, and the community becomes dominated by insectivores and by tolerant species such as the Redbreast Sunfish, ultimately leading to depressed NCIBI metric scores and ratings compared to regional reference sites. Recommendation -- the cites of Cary and Raleigh, along with Wake County, should initiate a stream cleanup to remove urban debris illegally dumped into the stream and carried into the stream by stormwater runoff; until watershed stormwater controls are improved or expanded, continued monitoring of the impaired fish community is unnecessary, except for once every 10 years. The creek's close proximity to the Neuse River, good instream and riparian habitat diversity, and an abundance of prey items may explain the creek's high species diversity and the large sizes of many of the predatory species. Habitats -- moderate quality habitats, scores were 87 in 2000 and 90 in 2005 (data were not collected in 1995); very sinuous natural channel flowing between limestone hills; dense shade offered by the wide riparian zones; coarse woody debris (submerged and snags); Fissidens. Water Quality -- low flow; the specific conductance has been elevated at times -- in August 1995 it was 217 pS/cm, in 2000 it was 270 pS/cm, but in March 1995 it was 105 pS/cm, in 2005 it was 99 pS/cm, and in 2015 it was 127 pS/cm; in 2015, it was determined that the elevated readings originate from an unnamed tributary on the left (the reading was 317 pS/cm and the pH was 7.2 s.u.) that drains a unique geological (soil) formation or transports the backwash from a saltwater swimming pool; like other streams in this subbasin, the pH was not low because of the effects of the limestone geology; the water is extremely dark and tannin stained. Habitats -- high quality habitats, score was 91 in 2005 (data were not collected in 1991); narrow stream; coarse woody debris (submerged and snags); pools, and runs; mature Bald Cypress forest with open bottomlands. Water Quality -- specific conductance was within the norm for a Neuse Coastal Plain stream, was 106 pS/cm in 2005 (data were not collected in 1991). NCIBI Scores and Ratings are not applied because metrics and scoring criteria development is still underway for wadeable Coastal Plain streams. 2015 -- only 194 fish collected in 2015 contrasted to 627 collected in 2005; the increasingly uncommon and intolerant Ironcolor Shiner was absent in 2015, 74 specimens of this species had been collected in 2015. 1991-2015 -- 28 species known from the site including 7 species of sunfish, 4 species each of cyprinids, catfish, and darters, and 1 species of sucker; dominant species are the intermediate Dusky Shiner (1991 and 2005) and the tolerant Redbreast Sunfish and tolerant Eastern Mosquitofish (2015). NCIBI Scores and Ratings are not applied because metrics and scoring criteria development is still underway for wadeable Coastal Plain streams. 2015 -- fewest fish collected (n = 47) and lowest Percentage of Tolerant Fish (9%) from any Neuse Coastal Plain site in 2015; 1 of only 2 sites were the wide- spread and intermediate American Eel was not collected. 2005 & 2015 -- 22 species are known from the site including 7 species of sunfish, 4 species each of cyprinids and catfish, and 2 species of darters; suckers have never been collected at this site; 1 of only 7 Neuse Coastal Plain sites from which the White Shiner was collected, it is an obligate colonial spawner on Bluehead Chub and Bull Chub nests, both species are unknown from this site which may explain the shiner's rarity, indeed, only four specimens of White Shiner have been collected at this site (in 2005); dominant species are the intermediate Highfin Shiner (2005 and 2015) and the intermediate Bluegill (2015).
