In accordance with General Permit NO. NCG020000 Vulcan Materials Company, LLC (Vulcan)
is submitting notification within the two weeks of receipt (March 23, 2026) of analytical results
indicating an exceedance of a benchmark value as outlined in Part F Table 2 and Section F-5.
In this case our Outfall 001 turbidity results indicated a result of 70.1 NTU.
Vulcan is in the process of implementing the Tier One response requirements for turbidity
exceedance, detailed in Part F, Table 5 of General Permit No. NCG020000. On March 27,
2026 Tony Johnson (Environmental Engineer—Vulcan), Jacob Adams (Quality Control Tech —
Vulcan), and myself attempted to identify and evaluate the possible causes of the benchmark
exceedance for a sample taken on March 17, 2026. Following an evaluation, we have identified
the primary cause as an insufficient water treatment structure and not allowing necessary time
for the sediment to settle out of the water.
Following the evaluation, the facility will upgrade the water treatment structures to ensure that
water entering the sump passes through a strengthened riprap check dam lined with washed
stone. Additionally, staff training was provided to emphasize the importance of sufficient settling
time and the use of visual inspections to evaluate water quality before discharge commences.
Vulcan will continue to monitor the effectiveness of these improvements and will implement
further corrective actions should monitoring results indicate the need for further mitigation.
Documentation of all responses and corrective actions performed in accordance with the Tier
One requirements for turbidity will be maintained with the facility's Stormwater Pollution
Prevention Plan.
