Why does the quarry need an NPDESpermit? ■
■
• The Vanceboro Quarry will produce crushed limestone for the construction
industry.
• The open mine pit will accu m u late comingled groundwater and stormwater.
,:omingled = mixing of wastewater, groundwater & stormwater.
• The mine pit will need to be dewatered by pumping .
Dewatering = pumping water from a mine pit or excavation.
• The Clean Water Act (CWA) & NC General Statue 143-215. 1 , requires an
NPDES permit for control of sources of water pollution .
NPDES = National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System .
