(NewTech) is pleased to submit this letter summarizing our observations of the Test Pits as related to Estimated Seasonal High Water Table (ESHWT) depth determination at the Davis Village site. The test pits were performed at the location of the sand filters to be constructed at the subject site. This report contains a brief description of the project information provided to us, general site and subsurface conditions revealed during the exploration. The primary purpose of this study was to obtain information regarding the subsurface conditions at the proposed sand filters, assess the engineering characteristics of the subsurface materials, and determination of estimated seasonal high water table depth/elevation (if evident). This report contains the following items: • Photographic Logs, Site Vicinity Map and Test Location Plan, • Summary of Observations, visual soil classifications and descriptions, • A general review of the subsurface soils and estimated seasonal high water table depth from existing ground surface (if evident), • Groundwater level measurements. 2630 South Tryon Street—Suite F • Charlotte,North Carolina 28203 • 704.258.3755 •www.newtechgeo.com Summary of ESHWT Deteuuination—Revision 1 NewTech Project No. 124.003 Davis Village Site December 19,2022 EXPLORATION PROCEDURES NewTech visited the site on December 16, 2022 and completed two (2) Test Pits (identified as TP-1 and TP-2) in the proposed sand filters. The approximate location of the Test Pits is shown on Figure 2 — "Test Location Plan" provided in Appendix 2. Pott Hound Engineering, PLLC provided us with a plan titled"Davis Village Phifer Road Wingate, NC — Overall Grading Plan— Sheet Index" dated May 1, 2022 that indicated the approximate locations of the proposed sand filters. The test location was located from their plans by NewTech personnel. The Test Pits were advanced to depths of approximately 5 feet below the existing ground surface. The soil samples were collected to be visually examined and classified in general accordance with ASTM D-2488. The Munsell Soil Color Charts (2009 Revision) were used to identify the hue, value, and chroma of soil samples. The classification symbols are depicted on the "Test Pit Observation Logs" provided in Appendix 3. GENERALIZED SUBSURFACE STRATIGRAPHY General subsurface conditions observed during our geotechnical study are described herein. For more detailed soil descriptions and stratifications at a particular test location, the respective"Test Pit Observation Log" provided in Appendix 3 should be reviewed. The horizontal stratification lines designating the interface between various strata represents approximate boundaries. Transitions between different strata in the field may be gradual in both the horizontal and vertical directions. Beginning from the ground surface, a layer of Cultivated Fill Soils (surficial organic soils) was observed at the existing ground surface with a thickness of approximately 18 inches. Beneath the topsoil layer, residual (undisturbed) soils were encountered that consisted of elastic silts. Partially Weathered Rock(PWR) known in the local area as Union County "Shale Rock" was encountered underlying the residual soils and extended to Excavator Refusal. 2 Summary of ESHWT Deteuuination—Revision 1 NewTech Project No. 124.003 Davis Village Site December 19,2022 GROUNDWATER LEVEL MEASURMENTS Groundwater was not observed in the Test Pits at the time of completion and after 24 hours. However, perched ground water was observers on top of the PWR surface encountered in the Test Pits, Please note that groundwater levels tend to fluctuate with seasonal and climatic variations, as well as with some types of construction operations. ESTIMATED SEASONAL HIGH WATER TABLE The ESHWT is the highest average depth of water during the wettest season. The ESHWT is defined as a change in the color of the soil layer due to water staining (typically, gray redoximorphic depletions and mottling). Spots or blotches of different color or shades of color interspersed with a dominant color in soil, commonly referred to as mottling. Mottling is a historic indication for the presence of ground water caused by intermittent periods of saturation and drying and may be indicative of poor aeration and impeded drainage. Mottling is a"general indication of groundwater" flowing through this layer, but it is not known whether the groundwater flow was recent or ancient. 3 Summary of ESHWT Deteuuination—Revision 1 NewTech Project No. 124.003 Davis Village Site December 19,2022 CONCLUSIONS Based on our observations, Estimated Seasonal High Water Table (ESHWT) indicators (water stained soils) were evident in soils sampled in the Sand Filter TP-1 and TP-2. However, it is our finding that the water is not the true ESHWT but rather perched water on top of the PWR and it percolates downward to the top of the rock surface flowing through the rock to the true water table below the top of rock in the project area. The following table summarizes the results of the borings and our observations. Summary Table of the Boring Results and Our Observations Test Pit Test Existing Ground Prop. If the above-described proj ect conditions are incorrect or changed after the issuance of this report, or subsurface conditions encountered during construction are different from those reported, NewTech should be notified, and these recommendations will be re-evaluated based on the changed conditions to make appropriate revisions.
