This facility is a true regional treatment plant that serves the Lillington, Fuquay-Varina, Coats, Buies Creek, Erwin and Angier communities, resulting in the consolidation of 5 separate discharges into one.. The treatment train begins at the headworks, where the raw wastewater is screened to remove paper, plastic, rags and any other debris greater than 1/8 inch in diameter. The wastewater then flows to the grit removal system where heavy inorganic material such as sand is settled out and removed. The flow is then measured through a parshall flume and recorded on a 24 hour interval. The biological treatment occurs in one of two 3.75 million gallon oxidation ditches. Here organic and chemical compounds are reduced by microorganisms under aerobic conditions. Once reduced, this wastewater is routed to the anoxic tanks where nutrient bi-products from the aerobic treatment are further removed. When the biological treatment is complete, the wastewater flows to one of two 1.1 million gallon clarifiers. Here the activated sludge is allowed to settle to the bottom of the tank where it is pumped back to the treatment units to treat more raw waste. The clear water leaves the clarifiers and flows to four disk filters and three traveling bridge tertiary filters where fine solids are separated from the final effluent. After filtration, the treated effluent is disinfected with Ultra -Violet light. Finally, the effluent moves to the cascade aerator. This helps add oxygen to the water before it flows to the Cape Fear River. Performance North Harnett Regional treated 1.548 billion gallons with an average daily flow of 4.24 MGD. We achieved a 99% removal efficiency for BOD, 99% for TSS and 99.9% NH3 along with an 85% and 47% removal of Total Nitrogen and Total Phosphorous respectively.
