The treated wastewater originated from a failed weld on a HDPE pipe used to carry recycle water from the lagoon to the animal houses for cleaning. The discharge was discovered around 2:25 pm and farm personnel took immediate steps to stop and contain the wastewater and begin remediation by returning the wastewater to the farm's permitted system. It was estimated that approximately 29,100 gallons of wastewater escaped a secondary containment structure and entered a ditch that leads to a beaver pond along Little Turnbull Creek that leads to Turnbull Creek. The NCDEQ Division of Water Resources was notified of the incident around 4:45 pm. Remediation efforts continued throughout the weekend. To prevent future discharges of this type, all repairs and installations of HDPE pipe will be pressure tested before being placed in operation, farm personnel will be retrained on daily inspections of pipes and on procedures for managing secondary containments.
