Description of Collection System or Treatment Process The Town of Plymouth operates a 0.8 MGD activated sludge wastewater treatment plant and discharges its effluent to the Roanoke River. Wastewater is collected in approximately 27 miles of 8" and 12" diameter sewer lines and pumped where necessary via 18 lift stations to the treatment plant. The oldest available records indicate that the original parts of the system were constructed in 1915. Up until the late 1960s when the first lift stations were built, raw sewage was simply piped directly to the most convenient water body; Conaby Creek and the Roanoke River. The wastewater treatment plant was originally constructed in 1967 and consists of a grit removal system, fine -mesh bar screen and extended aeration basin, the solids are settled in two secondary clarifiers operated in parallel. Excess sludge is aerobically digested, thickened, and then applied in liquid form to pasture land in Washington County; thus recycling the nutrients back to the soil. Performance For the report period of January 2022 through December of 2022, the Town of Plymouth's Wastewater Treatment Plant processed approximately 124.4 million gallons of wastewater collected from approximately 1,510 dischargers to our system. Installed 1 new pump at Jefferson Street lift station. Replaced 15ft of sewer pipe at Winesett Circle and 5ft at Harvey Court. WWTP (Wastewater Treatment Plant): A new lift station was installed to handle the water from the grit system and return it to the headworks instead of Digester 3. One of this lift station's pumps has been replaced as well as the float switches and several control panel components. The aerator motor for Digester 2 was replaced. One of the floating aerators in the Aeration Basin has been replaced. Had an inspection from the State's Laboratory Certification Branch. Updated our lab procedures and records keeping per inspector's recommendations. Trained all Back Up ORC's in proper procedures for testing pH & Temperature. Turned in peiruit renewal paperwork to the state. The Town of Plymouth is dedicated to improving our wastewater system and keeping the maintenance cost down, but these things require your help. You can help by: • Reporting illegal connections of sump pumps and roof drains into the system; • Reporting broken cleanout caps; and • Disposing fats, oils, and grease (known as FOG) by scraping grease from cookware and wiping with paper towels prior to washing. When fatty liquids are washed down sinks and/or flushed down toilets, it may cause sewer blockages that sometimes cause spills. Just practicing these few techniques, not only will help to reduce the Town's maintenance cost, but also could save you money by keeping you from having to call a plumber to unclog your sewer line.
