RE: Second Exceedance of TSS Benchmark — Outfall 2
On Friday, May 27 at 9:15 AM, I collected the second quarter stormwater sample from
Outfall 2. Before collecting the sample, I completed the Qualitive Monitoring and documented
the results on the state's Qualitive Report. I noted in the report that the water was a light milky
gray with a clarity of 2 (mostly clear). I rated the suspended solids as a "2" also. The rain did
come down hard for about 10 minutes, but I took the sample right at the 30-minute mark. We
have been very dry this spring and our gravel truck parking lot and roads were very dusty
before the rain started.
On June 8th I received the results for the stormwater samples taken on May 27th. Our
Stormwater permit requires us to test for TSS, COD and Oil and Grease (non -Polar). Our TSS
results were 151 mg/L with a benchmark of 100. The TSS result from last quarter were 148.
Our COD results were 58 mg/L with a benchmark of 120. The COD results from last quarter
were 156. The Oil and Grease (non -Polar) results were <5.0 mg/L with a benchmark of 15. Last

quarter's results were <5.0. For the second quarter in a row the TSS came back higher than the
benchmark.
Upon getting the results back, Gordon Sessoms and I did a thorough stormwater
management inspection of the area encompassing the #2 Stormwater site. Dust was the only
source that I could identify that might be contributing to the high levels of suspended solids in
the stormwater sample. It is still very dry here and has not rained since the stormwater samples
were collected. The graveled truck/trailer parking area where the stormwater sheds from was
covered in dust. I have allowed the grass in the bottom of the ditches to grow taller than
normal in hope of filtering some of suspended solids out of the stormwater. I also still have a
boom sock filter across the front of the drainage pipe on the opposite end where I collect the
samples in hopes of reducing any solids.
The afternoon of June 91n I contacted two of Perdue's Environmental managers to seek
advice for correcting my TSS issue. Environmental manager Ken Schoch suggested a different
style of sediment filter sock. He also suggested that I install them in multiple areas along the
ditch and at the entrance of the the where the stormwater samples are collected. The new
socks were ordered and then installed on Monday, June 20tn
A representative Stormwater sample will be collected at the next qualifying rainfall
event to determine if our action item has reduced our TSS levels. If there are any other
recommendations, please don't hesitate to call.
