I reviewed the map supplied by PE for SW permit renewal and t1d not see two of the stormwater outlets tat
the Cape Fear River that were identified during an RRO inspection in 2009.'
If you look at the Outfall SW -001, which is located by the 1956 inactive ash pond area (at this location on the
part of the pond that borders the Cape Fear River) we found an old discharge ditch (unidentified SW
outlet)that is "not identified on the site drainage map" that accompanied the sw application for permit
renewal.
I have attached a copy of the 2009 RRO inspection that includes pics and comments on this.

Hi Bethany,
The Cape Fear River behind Buckhorn dam AU# 18-(4 5) is impaired (2010 303(d)list) due to Chlorophyll a standard
violations This is lust below where the Haw and the Deep River Join There is a need to reduce the nutrient loading to
this,segment of the River system At some point in the future a TMDL and or a nutrient management reduction strategy
will be needed from below Jordan Lake dam and Randleman Reservoir to the Buckhorn Dam We are working with the
NPDES unit to develop a permitting strategy in order to protect this -section of the Cape Fear from becoming more
degraded while we determine the best way to address this issue
'There is a very high nutrient load in this section of the Cape Fear basin I don't have a feel for the type of nutrients that
might becoming f rom this power plant I think nutrient,monrtormg would be a,good thing They may already do some,
monitoring'as part of the Cape Fear monitoring coalition I believe that Progress Energy is,a member of all three Cape
coalitions
Kathy, Do you have,any thing ,you would like to add? It would be nice to have Progress energy, partner with the other
dischargers in the monitoring and modeling -effort that needs to take place Not sure how the sto"rmwater permits play
into this

Hi Nora,
I know the Cape Fear Basinwide Plan is in the works. I'm working on a permit for Progress Energy (Cape Fear Steam Stn,
right below confluence of Haw and Deep Rivers near Moncure) The current Basinwide Plan is from 2005, so I was
wondering if there is any updated info on this sub -basin I should consider for this stormwater permit I thought it would

be better to draw from something more recent than &years ago if possible. The plant discharges.to both Shaddox,Creek
(right near,the end) and the Cape Fear River. I don't think any of these stretches are on the current irripaired streams list
or have a TMdL, but I could be wrong. Nothing,is showing upon my GIS layer anyway.
Any info. you have on that area/watershed would be really helpful) Our,power plant stormwater permits follow a
consistent template, but I do add site-specific language for any impairments or special considerations (for example, we
added nutrient monitoring for a plant in the Lake Wylie watershed). This,is sub -basin 03-06-07 (if.that helps ... I know
we're moving away from that system).
