AS OF MARCH 10, 2003, ALL CONSTRUCTION SITES ONE (1) ACRE OR MORE, REQUIRES A NPDES PERMIT THEREFORE: a. WRITTEN DOCUMENTATION OF A DEVIATION FROM APPROVED PLAN MUST BE NOTED ON THE APPROVED PLANS. b. WRITTEN DOCUMENTATION OF AN EMERGENCY SITUATION WHERE SEDIMENT HAS BEEN DISCHARGED OFF SITE MUST BE RECORDED. A NEW SELF -INSPECTION PROGRAM FOR ALL LAND -DISTURBING ACTIVITIES LARGER THAN ONE (1) ACRE BECAME EFFECTIVE OCTOBER 1, 2010 AS PER GS 113A-54.1(E). THIS GENERAL STATUE DIRECTS ALL PERSONS CONDUCTING LAND -DISTURBING ACTIVITIES LARGER THAN ONE (1) ACRE TO INSPECT THEIR PROJECT AFTER COMPLETING EACH PHASE OF THE PROJECT, AND DOCUMENT THE INSPECTION IN WRITING. SOME ADJUSTMENT TO FINISH GRADES MAY BE NECESSARY AND WILL BE CONSIDERED ONLY AFTER APPROVAL OF THE OWNER AND ARCHITECT. NO OFFSITE MATERIALS ARE EXPECTED TO BE REQUIRED TO BALANCE THE SITE. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE PROOF THAT BORROW/WASTE AREA(S) ARE OPERATING UNDER AN APPROVED EROSION CONTROL PLAN. IF ADJUSTMENTS ARE SUBMITTED AND APPROVED, THE GRADING CONTRACTORS SHALL PROVIDE A SEQUENCE OF CONSTRUCTION PRIOR ANY CHANGE. THIS SHALL INCLUDE HIS ESTIMATE OF CUT VERSUS FILL AND THE METHOD FOR MOVING DIRT AROUND THE ENTIRE SITE TO THE COMPLETION OF THE PROJECT. 13. NO WORK SHALL BE DONE IN ANY WETLAND AREA UNTIL APPROVAL HAS BEEN GRANTED BY THE APPROPRIATE AGENCIES. 14. GENERAL CONTRACTOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR INSPECTION/MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR OF ALL EROSION CONTROL MEASURES UNTIL THE PROJECT IS COMPLETE. 15. ALL FILL SLOPES OVER 6' HIGH SHALL HAVE EARTH BERMS AND SLOPE DRAINS INSTALLED AT THE END OF EACH DAY OF GRADING ACTIVITY, AS SLOPES EXTEND UPWARDS. TEMPORARY SLOPE DRAINS ARE TO BE PROVIDED FOR ALL SLOPES GREATER THAN EIGHT FEET HIGH. MAINTAIN BERMS AT THE TOP OF FILL SLOPES TO DIRECT RUN OFF TO SLOPE DRAINS. PERMANENT SLOPE DRAINS INDICATED SHALL BE BURIED WITH A MINIMUM OF 12" OF COVER. 16. CONTRACTOR SHALL EXPLORE FOR ON -SITE MATERIAL TO REPLACE ANY UNSUITABLE MATERIAL ENCOUNTERED. THIS TASK SHALL OCCUR IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE LOGGING OPERATION. THE DESIGNATED GEO-TECH COMPANY WILL PROVIDE ASSISTANCE. 17. TOP SOIL CAN BE STOCKPILED WHERE SHOWN ON PLAN. STOCKPILE WILL REQUIRE SILT FENCES AND BERMS FOR EROSION CONTROL. FIELDS SHALL BE ROUGH GRADED PRIOR TO STOCKPILING. ANY EXCESS SOIL IS THE PROPERTY OF OWNER. SOIL SHALL BE STOCKPILED IN INDICATED AREAS, SEEDED AND SILT FENCE SHALL BE ADDED ON THE LOW SIDE OF THE STOCKPILE. CONFIRM LOCATION OF STOCKPILES WITH OWNER. 18. CONTRACTOR SHALL VERIFY ALL CURBING AND PARKING GRADES MANUALLY PRIOR TO INSTALLATION. ANY ADJUSTMENTS SHALL BE MADE AT THIS TIME TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE DRAINAGE. CONTACT THE SITE ENGINEER IMMEDIATELY FOR RECOMMENDATIONS. 19. CONTRACTOR WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR SCARIFYING THE SOIL, AS NECESSARY FOR ADEQUATE USAGE WITH NO ADDITIONAL COST TO THE OWNER. 20. ALL EROSION CONTROL DEVICES ARE TO REMAIN IN PLACE UNTIL SITE IS PROPERLY STABILIZED WITH SUFFICIENT GROUND COVER. GROUND COVER MUST BE MAINTAINED TO A DEGREE THAT PREVENTS SOIL EROSION AND SEDIMENTATION AT ALL TIMES. 21. CONTRACTOR SHALL CALL FOR AN INSPECTION PRIOR TO REMOVING ANY EROSION CONTROL DEVICES. REMOVAL OF EROSION CONTROL DEVICES SHALL OCCUR ONLY UPON RECEIPT OF APPROVAL FROM EROSION CONTROL INSPECTOR. ANY MODIFICATIONS TO THE APPROVED PLANS MUST BE PRE -APPROVED AND DOCUMENTED ON THE SELF -INSPECTION FORMS. 22. If renovating an existing lawn, destroy vegetation. • Till to a depth of four to six inches, smooth the soil remove rocks, roots, clods and vegetation. Water heavily to see if water puddles in any low spots. If so, add soil or regrade to eliminate low spots. Grade less than one-half inch below walks and drives. • Tilled soil will settle some - concrete or asphalt should not. For all grasses except Centipede, apply and rake in 50 pounds of dolomitic lime and 15 pounds of 5-10-15 fertilizer per 1,000 square feet. STEP 2 - Schedule Delivery • Schedule the order for sod to be delivered after preparatory work is completed and you are ready to install. Prompt installation on the day of delivery is crucial to a strong beginning for the lawn. Always order slightly more sod than the measurements call for to avoid running short. STEP 3 - I install Sod • Water to dampen the bare soil and start laying the sod immediately after delivery. Begin watering lawn within 30 minutes of installation. Sod is a living plant that requires contact and moisture to survive. • I n hot weather, protect unlaid sod by placing pallets in shade or unrolling and keeping sod in the shade. • Begin installing sod along the longest straight line - such as a driveway or sidewalk. Butt and push edges and ends against each other tightly, and stretch lightly. Avoid gaps or overlaps. Stagger the joints in each row in a brick -like fashion, using a large sharp knife to trim corners, etc. • Avoid leaving small strips at outer edge as they will not retain moisture. On slopes, place sod across the slope. After installing the turf, roll the entire area to improve sod/soil contact and remove air pockets. STEP 4 - Water • Give the new lawn a good soaking of water within 1/2 hour of installation. Water daily, or more often, keeping sod moist until it is firmly rooted (about 2 weeks). Then less frequently and deeper watering should begin. • Lift a piece of sod here and there to ascertain that you are watering enough to wet the original soil below the sod. • Weather conditions will dictate the amount and frequency of watering. Be certain that the new lawn has enough moisture to survive hot, dry or windy periods. • Water areas near buildings more often where reflected heat dries the turf. STEP 5 - Mow • Begin mowing as soon as the sod has rooted to the extent that mowing does not displace it. It is important that mowing not be delayed too long. Cut high the first time, but gradually and deliberately lower the cut -height. CAUTION • Insects love and seek out lush, tender grass and can quickly multiply or migrate into a new lawn with devastating consequences. Regulations do not permit sod growers to use long-lasting insecticides and no attempt is typically made to eradicate all insects, simply to control the population. All sod is probably shipped with some insects and their larvae or eggs. It is therefore imperative that you watch closely for insect damage and immediately apply an insecticide if needed. Sevin is among the safer insecticides and usually controls the most rapid population builders such as army worms and sod webworms. Maintenance • Mow often, generally removing no more than 1/3 of the grass height at a mowing. Keep the mower blade sharp. It is a good investment in your lawn as well as the value of your home. A professionally installed system should be designed for complete and even distribution, have battery bade -up for any timing devices, and a rain sensor to stop the system when rain occurs. • Portable hose sprinklers Sprinkler systems are less expensive than under -ground systems. Sprinklers may be either "portable surface" (the most common) requiring moving the sprinkler to each area of the lawn or "traveling sprinkler", that follows the hose or a cable around the lawn. Both types of sprinklers need frequent observation to avoid mis-application and water waste. How Much • As a general rule, keeping the lawn healthy requires 1 to 2 inches of water weekly - including rainfall. Water once every 2 to 3 days in dry weather (about 1/2 inch at each application). Heavy clay soils will require less water and less frequent applications than sandier soils.
