On April 28, 2021 the Mooresville Regional Office became aware that Buck Station activated EAP Leve
3 for intermediate dam (ROWAN-071). An on -site investigation was conducted on April 29, 2021 @
11:29 a.m.
It was found that a 20' x 20' area had eroded at the toe of an earthen containment dam for ash basin
#2. It was noted that the area within ash basin #2 appeared dry, stable and forested. The backwash
line from a filter system had separated and the discharged resulted in an eroded area. Filter backwash
water and material from the eroded area were contained within ash basin #3. Ash basin #3 is in the
process of being dewatered. Filtered water from ash basin #3 is discharged via Outfall #007 which is
permitted under NPDES Permit #NC0004774.
At the time of site investigation dewatering of ash basin #3 had stopped and there were no water qualit
violations noted.
