Environmental Consultants Phil Norris Norris & Tunstall Consulting Engineers, P.C. 1429 Ash Little River Road Ash, NC 28420 E CEOVE K APR 16 2012 by. - January 25 , 2012 Reference: Soil Assessment for Proposed Storm Water Proposal for Beach Road GoGas, Brunswick County, NC Dear Phil, Land Management Group, Inc. evaluated the parcel for the purpose of providing site data to the engineer for his submittal of the proposed storm water retention plan for the proposed business. The purpose of the evaluation was to describe the soil profiles, quantify the depth to the seasonal high water table, estimate permeability and to inform the project engineer of any potential limitations of this project within the proposed stormwater retention areas The soils at this site are mapped as Foreston and Yaupon in the Soil Survey of Brunswick County (USDA, 1986). Soil borings 1 and 2 are like the Yaupon soil type. The soil boring locations are shown in Appendix A and the soil profile descriptions are shown in Appendix B. Soil descriptions for Foreston and Yaupon are shown in Appendix C. The site contains an existing stormwater structure along the rear of the property as shown in Appendix A. Borings were made at the existing grade just outside of the stormwater structure. This feature appears to have been installed in the early 1990's. Prior to this time the site had been used as the dredge spoil location for the cooling water canal from the Progress Energy Plant. The fines from the pumping settled in the topographic lows within the containment dike and coincide with this site location. This work was performed in the late 1960's. The seasonal high water table found in most soils is normally evident by observation of redoximorphic features suggesting past conditions of saturation and reduction. In the same way, there can be modern drainage features such as canals or ditches that have altered the hydrologic profile. Often, observed redoximorphic features are relicts of previous hydrologic conditions but not current ones. The mottles observed in the dark colored material of the fill layers are from the spoil that was pumped out of the canal from the adjacent tract and are not indicative of the seasonal high water table. The under -lying soil horizons are identical to those found in the soil mapped as Foreston. The degree of expression of mottles as shown in Appendix B is evidence that SHWT occurs at 62" for soil borings 1 and 2. Soil permeability is estimated based on soil physical properties. The following are estimates of the soils at each location. Boring one has an estimated permeability of 0.1 - 0.15 inches per hour in the silty clay loam horizon. The lower BT horizon had an estimated permeability of 4.0 - 6.0 inches per hour. Boring two has similar permeability rates. The heavy layers in this area could be excavated and replaced with clean, sand fill for a proposed stormwater system. In summary, this site has one areas that is proposed for stormwater system placement. These areas have soils that have seasonal high water tables that are 64" from the soil surface in the two locations. If the proposed Permanent Pool Elevation is more than 6" below the seasonal high water table elevation, then additional testing and analysis may be required to quantify any affect on adjacent wetlands, surface waters, and/or buffers where applicable. Please refer to the NC DENR DWQ February 19, 2009 Memo Article 2 subsections a-d for further guidance. MEIC 05/2008 F0REST0N SERIES The Foreston series consists of moderately well drained, moderately rapidly permeable soils that formed in marine sediment. These soils are on high ridges and slight rises within broad flat interstream divides of the Coastal Plain. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. TYPE LOCATION: Williamsburg County, South Carolina; 4.6 miles southeast on South Carolina Highway 512 from the intersection of U.S. Highway 52 in Cades, South Carolina; 0.1 mile southwest on South Carolina Secondary Highway 159; 0.2 mile south on field. road; 33 feet northeast of road. RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Reaction is very strongly acid to slightly acid in the A and E horizon and very strongly acid or strongly acid in the Bt horizon. The A or Ap horizon has hue of 1 OYR or 2.5Y, value of 3 or 4, and chroma of 1 or 2. It is sand, fine sand, loamy sand or loamy fine sand. The E and F horizons have hue of 1 OYR or 2.5Y, value of 5 to 7, and chroma of 1 to 4. Redox features of higher chroma are present in some pedons. In some pedons the E' horizon is discontinuous and is mottled. It is sand, fine sand, loamy sand, or loamy fine sand. The upper Bt horizon has hue of 7.5YR to 2.5Y, value of 5 or 6, and chroma of 4 to 6. Redox features in shades of red, yellow, and brown are present in some pedons and gray iron depletions are within 30 inches of the surface. It is sandy loam or fine sandy loam with less than 20 percent silt. Some pedons have a thin subhorizon that is sandy clay loam. Many pedons contain lenses and pockets of clean sand. Some pedons have a few nodules of plinthite. The B't horizon has hue of 7.5YR to 2.5Y, value of 4 to 7, and chroma of 1 to 8. It has few to many redox features in shades of red, yellow, brown, and gray or it is mottled. It is sandy loam, fine sandy loam or sandy clay loam. The C horizon has hue of 7.5YR to 2.5Y, value of 4 through 8, and chroma of 1 through 8 or it is mottled without a dominant matrix color. It is fine sand, sand, loamy fine sandy, fine sandy loam, sandy clay loam, sandy loam, or sandy clay and in some pedons it is stratified with these textures. COMPETING SERIES: (This section has not been reviewed; 418198) These are the Dallardsville and Harleston series in the same family and the Dragston, Johns, Nansemond, Olanta, Pactolus, Rumford, Sequatche, and Whitwell series in similar families. Dallardsville soils have tongues of albic material in the B horizon. Harleston soils contain more than 20 percent silt in the particle -size control section. Dragston are aquults. Johns and Whitwell soils are fine loamy. Nansemond soils do not have secondary Bt horizons within 60 inches. Olanta, Rumford, and Sequatchie soils do not have mottles of chroma 2 or less within 24 inches of the top of the argillic horizon. Pactolus soils are sandy throughout. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Foreston soils are on nearly level slopes in the Coastal Plain. The soil formed in loamy marine sediments. Near the type location the mean annual temperature is 64 degrees F., the average annual rainfall is 48 inches, and the frost -free season is about 228 days. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Autryville, Bonneau, Chisolm, Dothan, FuquaFuquay, Goldsboro, Kalmia, Leon, L n�chbuurg, Lynn Haven, Norfolk, Ocilla, Paxville, Rains, Rutlee, and Wagram soils. The Autryville, Bonneau, Chisolm, Dothan, Fuquay, Norfolk, and Wagram soils are in slightly higher positions on the landscape and are better drained. In addition, these soils, except for Dothan and Norfolk, are arenic. They all have fine -loamy Bt horizons. The Goldsboro soils are in a similar position on the landscape, but they are fine -loamy. Lynchburg, Ocilla, Paxville and Rains soils are in slightly lower positions on the landscape and are more poorly drained and have fine -loamy Bt horizons. Leon, Lynn Haven and Rutlege soils are in the lowest position on the landscape, are more poorly drained, and are sandy throughout. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well drained. Surface runoff is slow. Permeability is moderately rapid. USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas of these soils have been cleared and are cropped to corn, cotton, tobacco, soybeans, and hay crops. Vegetation of forested areas include various species of pine with mixed hardwoods. DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Coastal Plains of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. LB:DLN 10/2003 YAUPON SERIES The Yaupon series consists of somewhat poorly drained to moderately well drained, slowly permeable soils in the Lower Coastal Plain. The soils formed in fine textured soil material deposited by dredging operations. Slopes range from 0 to 15 percent. TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, semiactive, nonacid, thermic Aquic Udorthents TYPICAL PEDON: Yaupon silty clay loam. (Colors are for moist unless otherwise stated). A1--0 to 7 inches; dark gray (IOYR 4/1) silty clay loam, common medium distinct yellowish red (5YR 4/6) mottles; moderate medium platy structure; firm, sticky, plastic, few fine roots; very strongly acid; gradual smooth boundary. (0 to 10 inches thick) Clg--7 to 20 inches; dark gray (5YR 4/1) silty clay; massive; very firm, very sticky, very plastic; mildly alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. (5 to 20 inches thick) C2g--20 to 30 inches; dark greenish gray (5GY 4/1) silty clay; common medium distinct dark gray (5Y 4/1) mottles; massive; firm, very sticky, very plastic; few small dark reddish brown (5YR 312) concretions; moderately alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. (5 to 10 inches thick) C3g--30 to 76 inches; dark greenish gray (5GY 411) silty clay; massive; firm, very sticky, very plastic; few small dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) concretions; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (10 to 50 inches thick) Ab--76 to 85 inches; black (10YR 2/1) fine sandy loam; weak medium granular structure; very friable; very strongly acid. (0 to 15 inches thick) TYPE LOCATION: Brunswick County, North Carolina; .l mile northeast of the Bridge of NC 133 Highway and the lntercoastal Waterway; 0.1 mile south of the intersection of NC 133 Highway and service road. RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Thickness of the dredge spoil soil material ranges from 20 to more than 80 inches. Shrinkage cracks open at the surface range from 15 to 35 inches apart and are from 2 to 4 inches wide ranging up to 6 or 8 inches in some places, about 30 inches deep, they are commonly filled with fine sand. Reaction range from very strongly acid to medium acid in the surface layer except where limed and from strongly acid to moderately alkaline in the C horizon. Shells and shell fragments range from 0 to 20 percent in individual horizons. The grey color is not indicative of the present drainage but of the condition of the original sediments. The A 1 horizon has hue of l OYR to 5Y, value of 3 to 6, and chroma of 0 to 2. The A horizon is fine sandy loam, loam, silt loam, and silty clay loam. The C horizon has hue of I OYR to 5G or 5B, value of 4 to 6 and chroma of 1 to 8. The C horizon is sandy clay, clay loam, silty clay, or clay. The 10-to 40-inch control section averages from 35 to 60 percent clay and from 35 to 65 percent silt. The underlying buried horizon is variable in colors and textures. COMPETING SERIES: There are no recognized competing series in this family GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Yaupon soils are areas constructed from deposited dredge spoil on the Lower Coastal Plain. The major portion of these areas are generally convex with slopes from 0 to 6 percent with some areas ranging up to 15 percent. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are Axis, Bohicket, Bragg, Carteret, Corolla, Duckston, Hobonny, Leon, Muckalee, Murville, Pactolus, and Wando soils. Axis, Bohicket, and Carteret soils are very poorly drained and are flooded daily by tides. Corolla Duckston, Leon, Murville, Pactolus, and Wando soils are sandy. Hobonny soils are organic. Muckalee soils are coarse -loamy. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat poorly to moderately well drained with soil surface runoff. Permeability is slow to very slow. Perched water can be expected between layers of the sediments. There is an apparent water table at 2.0 to 4.0 feet in the winter and early spring. USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas consists of idle land. The plant community is loblolly pine, longleaf pine, wax myrtle, black cherry, yaupon, sweetgum, eastern redcedar, live oak, water oak, myrtle oak, poison ivy, and muscadine grape. DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: The Lower Coastal Plain of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The series is of small extent.
