Topsoil and grass, or gravel is placed in the openings. The intensity of use by vehicles over the life of the pavement must be carefully assessed when selecting grass or gravel. Grass must have at least five hours of light on it each day if it is to survive.' Cars parked on the grass every day for extended periods of time will kill the grass beneath the cars. If parking is continuous, then gravel should be used in the openings instead of topsoil and grass. Gravel should be used if regular watering and maintenance of the grass is not antici- pated; otherwise the grass will die and eroding silt will clog and eventually kill the grass in adjacent grids. Gravel should also be used if oil drippings from continuously parked cars is expected to be excessive. For intermittently used lots, over- flow lots, or fire lanes, grass is recommended. Excavate and compact the soil subgrade. The soil subgrade should be uniformly compacted to 95 % of its optimum density prior to placing the gavel, sand and the grids. Place and compact the gravel base. Gravel used for road bases is acceptable for use with grids. The fines (aggregate smaller than the No. 50 sieve) can be omitted if additional water permeability is desired. If fines are omitted, then filter cloth will be required between the sand and gravel to prevent migration of sand into the base. The compacted gravel base should extend beyond the edge of the grids a minimum of 6" where possible. The thickness of the gravel base depends on the loads and. the strength of the soil subbase. For residential uses on adequately drained soil, the gravel base can be omitted and the grids placed on the sand layer (Figure 3). For heavy vehicular loads such as fire trucks, or repeated loads from cars, a minimum of 8" of compacted road base gravel should be used (Figure 4). Grids and Sand on Compacted Soil Subgrade Filter cloth is recommended for use with low CBR soils (less than 4%), those with high clay and silt contents, soils in high water table areas, or soils in low Iying areas subject to flooding. The filter cloth is placed over the compacted subgrade. The filter cloth should be fine enough to prevent migration of soil into the gravel base. Woven fabrics are preferred over non -woven materials when the cloth is placed directly under the sand layer in installations subject to traffic. Spread and screed the bedding sand. Grading re- quirements for the sand should conform to AST'M C 33 for concrete sand. Grids and Saud on Compacted Gravel Base not be used. The sand should be screeded to proper eleva- tions and have a uniform moisture content (not saturated) prior to placing the grids. The screeded sand should not be disturbed (Figure 5). Place the grids on the bedding sand. The grids should be placed with the minimum joint spacing of at least 1/16" (2 mm). If the grids touch, they may chip and spall upon repetitive loading. Vibrate the grids into the sand. Use a high -fre- quency (3500-5000 cycles per second), low amplitude plate vibrator. A rubber mat should be attached to the vibrator to protect the grids from cracking and chipping. Plywood sheets placed on the grids can be used for protection if a rubber mat is not available, At the end of each day the grids placed should all be vibrated. Sand should not be left without grids vibrated into it. Rainfall settles the exposed sand and prevents the grids from pressing into the sand when vibrated. If sand is left exposed, it should be covered with plastic to protect it from rain. Spread topsoil into the grids and vibrate again. Grass seed and fertilizer can be mixed with the topsoil or broadcast directly on the surface and swept into the openings and joints. The grids should be vibrated again after the voids are full. The final level of the topsoil should be 1/2" (13 mm) to 3/4" (20 mm) below the top surface. This will lend some protection to the grass from tires as it grows. d 1 1/2" (25-40 mm) duck.
