G%iir��l3r��� s%ienree.far/o, 1: FEB 2006 %, 9/0-4;2-0060 9IflA nylon, .A'62840.Y February 7, 2006 BY mflara 111pott/t ne/ John Kuske Norris, Kuske, and Tunstall 902 Market Street Wilmington, NC 28401 Reference Roger Moore Brick Company site in Hampstead, NC Dear Mr Kuske, An ellipse equation analysis has been performed in an effort to quantify the horizontal distance that the stormwater pond needs to be located from the existing wetlands in order to eliminate the potential for a hydrologic change within the wetlands The wetlands have been delineated by others and the stormwater pond has been designed by others Land Management Group's involvement in this project has been to verify the distance required between the two features The following calculations show how the soil conditions and pond outlet locations support the proposed design The specific goal of this project as professed by Rob Gordon (NCDENR) is to ensure that the stormwater pond is not effecting the first 12" of the water table within the previously delineated 404 wetland, which would potentially alter its protected wetland status I have performed a drainage analysis of this site using the ellipse equation The ellipse equation allows you to, 1) predetermine what drain spacings are necessary to achieve a desired water table drawdown, and 2) calculate the effect of existing drainage feature on lowering the watertable For this site, I have applied the equation in a manner that allows me to determine the effective drain spacings required in order to quantify the drainage effect to lower the water level from 0" to 12" below the existing surface within the wetland area I have evaluated the site with numerous soil borings in order to assess any potential limitations to drainage and to ascertain typical permeability values I have used previously collected site specific elevations to determine the potential drainage effects I used a simulated value of 42 feet to represent the wetland surface elevation, a simulated value of 40 feet to represent the stormwater pond outlet structure and a critical drawdown depth of 41 feet to represent a regulatorally important change in hydrology These elevations convert to relative elevations of 0 feet, 2 feet, and 1 foot respectively within the ellipse equation Specifically, the ellipse equation was manipulated to evaluate the half effect (or Le dimension) of equivalent parallel drains The Le measures the drawdown at the midpoint between two drains or conversely the maximum horizontal extent of a drainage effect from a single drainage feature as is proposed in this case The ellipse equation for parallel drains is typically described as follows S = [4P (b2 - a2) / Qd] "2 S = Drain spacing, P = Permeability of the soil, b = Difference between minimum drawdown and impermeable layer a = Difference between dram depth and impermeable layer Qd = Drainage coefficient Note Le from the USDA website is calculated as S/2 The USDA NRCS Wetland Science Institute website of hydrologic tools was used to manipulate the ellipse equation to determine site sensitivity to various drain spacings and drain depths Qd was set at 1, which equates to 1" of rainfall dissipated in a 1 daytime period The permeability was modeled as 5 inches per hour which represents the typical value for these soil types The depth to the impermeable layer (used in determining a and b) was set to 2 5 feet due to a compacted and cemented sand layer at that depth with a vertical conductivity of approximately 1/5 of the sand layer above This sharp contrast in vertical conductivities will act as an impermeable layer and cause the soil water to move laterally The proposed stormwater pond is to be installed at an effective distance of 35 feet from the wetland system Therefore, if one half of the drain spacing distance is less than 35 feet, then we must conclude that the stormwater dram as designed is not an aggressive enough drain to effect the wetland hydrology as discussed above The attached schematic shows that the stromwater drain must be installed within 15 5 feet of the wetlands in order to affect the hydrology within the wetlands The current proposal shows the effective distance between the wetland and the stormwater pond as 35 feet Therefore, I must conclude that, based upon site specific information and a conservative application of the ellipse equation, the proposed stromwater pond is far enough away from the wetlands so as to not affect wetland hydrology The ellipse equation was tested with a sensitivity analysis for various hydraulic conductivities and discharge rates and I am very comfortable in making these summary statements Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any further assistance to you in this project I may be reached at 910-452-0001, 910-471-0777, or at lwilliams(a-lmgrouR net Sincerely, Foh�P Williams NC Licensed Soil Scientist, #1113 SC Professional Soil Classifier, #58 Attachments / fit.\ f? If details such as the depth of the outlet are not yet available this equation and an estimate of the permeability from te'ture can be used to determine if further investigation of the details is warranted. Where hardpans or fragipans are present in the soil profile, this approach cannot be used. since these soil horizons act as confining layers and the values of a and b would chance. 4 When designing the drainage system, pipe must be laid on sufficient grade to prevent it from clogging with soil. The minimum grade for 4 inch diameter tile is U.17 This grade will provide a velocity at full flow in the the of u.B7 ft/sec A final word on the use of drainage in conjunction with septic systems ---Artificial drainage should be viewed only as assisting the performance of the septic tanl systems on a seasonal basis during the wet winter months Artificial drainage most not be used in conjunction with large sewage systems Under such circumstance the drainage system would act as a continuous point discharge for the partly treated sewage cue to the ground water mounding under large sewage systems. The system would therefore act as a discharging system and not a soil absorption system.
