The measured concentration was 113.Omg/L with a Benchmark of 100.Omg/L. Hanson has worked hard to minimize TSS and Turbidity concentrations at SDO-1, and as a result, have normally experienced TSS concentrations around the 10mg1L mark and Turbidity levels around 10 NTU. The 133mg/L TSS sample was collected on 07/02/13, and there were large amounts of rainfall occurring in that time period. The check dam is in good condition, and the basin does not need cleaning. The exceedance was just over the Benchmark, and the Turbidity samples were less than 50NTU. Attached is the Benchmark Exceedance Form with monitoring results and the exceedance highlighted in yellow. Hanson will continue to maintain its erosion control structures and keep suspended solids at a minimum. The Princeton Quarry had already taken actions stated in Tier One for Benchmark exceedances from the 18t 6- month period on 6/3110. Tier One steps were implemented, and improvement showed for Setteable Solids and Turbidity in the second consecutive set of samples. However, the TSS and Turbidity results exceeded the Benchmarks for the second consecutive sampling, and Hanson must follow the actions found under Tier Two in the new General Permit. Sample results were received on 10/11/10, and the environmental manager notified the plant manager and corporate lab manager of the Tier Two actions that must be taken, including a stormwater management inspection. Results from inspections and correspondence with those familiar with the site will be maintained in the SWPPP. Resulting from the Vt 6-month sampling, Tier One steps included the repair of a burst pipe transferring process water to the closed loop series of sediment basins. The repair ensured only stormwater was entering the conveyance leading to the SDO-1 outfall. During the 2nd 6-month sampling, Setteable. Solid results were satisfactory, and Turbidity was reduced. Heavy rain contributed to the exceedances as did some areas in the ditch that contains areas that need stabilizing. Turbidity needs improving; however, it needs to be sampled upstream and downstream of the outfall to demonstrate that the discharge does not elevate the Turbidity of the receiving stream. Hanson will clean and stabilize areas that could potentially elevate TSS and Turbidity. Check dams will be installed as necessary within the ditch leading to the outfall. Turbidity will be sampled upstream and downstream of the outfall. We have contracted a landscaper to create and maintain pathways leading to potential upstream and downstream sampling points. Hanson also will experiment with the use of "Floc Logs" to reduce TSS and Turbidity. The above corrections should bring the levels down to the Benchmarks stated in the permit. Per Tier Two Steps, Item #6 under Tier One instructions states to include monitoring results for that sampling period. Since there was not a Tier One form included in the newly issued General Permit, I have recorded the sample results on the old DMR form. Attached are sample results and a Qualitative Monitoring Report conducted at the time of sampling. Monthly monitoring will start in November-2010, and monthly monitoring reports will be submitted to the Raleigh Regional Office DWQ. Records will be maintained in the SWPPP. Should you have any questions or need additional information, please call me: (336) 398-1262.
