SUBJECT: Protected species update for the proposed I-485 Improvements from I-
77 to US-74 (Independence Boulevard) in Mecklenburg County
This memo serves to update the status of the following federally protected species for the above -
referenced project:
Species: Michaux's sumac (Rhus michauxii)
Schweinitz's sunflower, (Helianthus schweinitzii)
Smooth coneflower (Echinacea laevigata)
Survey Date: 8/21/2018
Habitat Description/ Survey Information:
A survey of all areas of potential habitat within the study area was conducted by NCDOT biologists
on August 21, 2018. There are some small areas of potential habitat throughout the corridor where
the roadside vegetation is disturbed. No Michaux's sumac, Schweinitz's sunflowers, or smooth
coneflowers were identified within the project area during the survey. Previous surveys for these
species were conducted on September 24, 2014, October 16, 2014, October 29-30, 2015, and
October 7, 2016. None of the above -referenced species were identified during any of those
surveys. Therefore, it is anticipated that this project will have No Effect on any of these species.
Biological Conclusion: No Effect, but Habitat Present
