Mr. Thomas:
On behalf of Koury Corporation, S&ME, Inc. (S&ME) presents this `Year II Monitoring Report', with
associated attachments to fulfill the monitoring requirements from October 2003 through October 2004
for the wetland creation at Grandover Golf Course and the stream restoration on Holden Road. The
monitoring wells at the Grandover site indicate that the soils have remained saturated or inundated
throughout the past year and no repairs were identified for this site during the 2003-2004 monitoring
period. The Holden Road site, although tested by several rainfall events, has maintained its stability and
recent enhancement/repair work should improve the site's habitat suitability. Vegetative sampling data,
monitoring well data, discussion of recent enhancement/repair work, and photo documentation are
included in this report for both sites.
Please feel free to contact us at (800) 849-2985 should you have any questions. We appreciate your
continued support of these projects and look forward to your comments and recommendations.
Sincerely,
S&ME, Inc.

Year II Monitoring Report S&ME Project No. 1588-02-044 and 44A
Grandover Wetland Creation/Holden Rd Stream Restoration October 21, 2004
1.0 Grandover Wetland Creation - Hole 12 West
1.1 Onsite Conditions
The Grandover wetland creation site has experienced above average amounts of rainfall in 2003
and relatively normal amounts of rainfall in 2004. The monitoring wells have remained either
saturated or inundated at the time of our site visits, and the vegetation that was planted is
thriving. The maturing vegetation, both native and planted has created an enormous difference
in the site's appearance and is evidence of the site's success as it houses a wider range of
amphibians and aquatic life. Photographs are attached in Appendix III.
1.2 Grading/Structures
Due to the success of grading repairs that were conducted during the Year I monitoring period,
no changes to grading or structures is necessary at this time.
1.3 Vegetation
Plants for the wetland creation have experienced tremendous growth and provided additional
aesthetic value. Containerized trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants have proved their hardiness
with high survivability rates. Vegetation data was gathered in September 2004 using six 60'
diameter sample plots, one in each of the five cells, and one located southwest of cell U. The
monitoring wells in each cell were chosen as center points for five of the plots due to their ease
of accessibility, along with the benefits of minimizing trampled vegetation while traveling to
these points. Longitude and latitude data for these wells is located on the vegetation plot data
sheets attached in Appendix I. A location map showing each plot is included in Figure 1.
Vegetation densities ranged from 539 to 1,895 stems per acre, with a mean density in the
sampling plots of 1,194 stems per acre. An informal survey of the remainder of the site indicates
that this level of success is apparent across the entire wetland creation area. Only planted
vegetation was surveyed in the vegetation plots, however, it is important to note that native
plants have grown significantly across the entire area.
1.4 Monitoring Wells
S&ME maintains six monitoring wells on-site (see Figure 1). Five monitoring wells are located
in the wetland creation area with one located on the adjacent existing wetland. The monitoring

wells are approximately 24 inches below final grade and the depth to water is measured
periodically throughout the monitoring period. The locations of these points are documented by
longitude and latitude on the vegetation plot data sheets, with each plot number corresponding to
the well number. The monitoring wells have demonstrated that the soils have remained either
saturated or inundated during each of our monthly site visits. Throughout the year, depth of
water ranged from 4 inches below the ground surface to 17 inches above the ground surface.
The monitoring wells within the creation area have indicated water levels at an average of 8
inches of water above the ground surface.

2.1 Onsite Conditions
The Holden Road site has experienced persistent growth in vegetation, from both planted and
native species, making it even more suitable for supporting a wide range of aquatic life. Besides
the obvious growth in vegetative cover, there have been multiple bankfull and flood events
associated with the recent hurricane season and the site has encountered large amounts of rainfall
over very short periods of time. These events have tested the stability of the stream and efforts
to correct problem areas are discussed in Section 2.3. Photos were taken of the stream in
September 2004 when the vegetative plot data was gathered. Also attached is a picture taken in
October 2004 while the enhancement and repairs were taking place. See photographs in
Appendix IV.
2.2 Vegetation
Vegetation data was gathered in September 2004 using six 60' diameter sample plots. The
longitude and latitude of these plots can be found on the vegetative plot data sheets attached in
Appendix II. Approximate locations of these plots are shown in Figure 2. Vegetation densities
ranged from 432 to 847 stems per acre, with a mean density of 672 stems per acre. An informal
survey of the remainder of the site indicates success of vegetation throughout the entire area
including the presence of many native grasses.

2.3 Enhancements/Repairs
Problem areas identified in the Year I Monitoring Report, were corrected in early October 2004
to enhance the stream's quality of habitat. The confluence of a small, intermittent tributary has
been reconstructed using a trackhoe. The area where the confluence meets the main channel has
been adjusted to a similar elevation to the base flow elevation of the main, perennial stream. The
channel confluence, an area of approximately 20 square feet, was redug and lined with geotextile
fabric and stone was handplaced to create two step pool structures to enable flow to gradually
descend from the wooded upstream area.
A J-hook was constructed in an area where critical shear stress against the banks was creating an
area of mass wasting of the adjacent bank. The J-hook was constructed using boulder-sized
rocks with a three foot diameter, found on site. The boulders were anchored with footer stones
and keyed into banks at bankfull elevations to prevent flow-around. It is our opinion that the
construction of this structure will help protect potentially unstable banks that are immediately
upstream and downstream of the J-hook.
Root-wad revetments were installed in two areas to create a suitable habitat for aquatic life while
aiding in the stabilization of banks. Large boulders were also used to secure these root wads into
banks.
Properly sized stone was added in several sections of the stream, creating riffle pools as heavy
equipment redefined channels in areas where mid-bars had formed. Branches and large debris
that had been washed into the stream, acting as barriers to the free flow of water, were removed
after recent storms. The overflow outlet connecting the overflow area to the pond was repaired
(see Figure 3). Stone lining this outlet had washed out and was repositioned and stabilized in
place by using geotextile fabric. Banks whose slopes were adjusted received straw net blankets
and a mix of one hundred live stake black willow (Salix nigra) trees along with fifty live stake
cottonwood (Populus deltoides) trees, planted along these particular banks.

3.0 Conclusions
The vegetation growth has played a vital role in creating a suitable habitat for aquatic life at both
the Grandover wetland creation site and the Holden Road stream restoration site. The
monitoring wells at the Grandover wetland creation site indicate that the soils have remained
saturated or inundated throughout the past year. No enhancements or repairs were identified for
the Grandover site during this monitoring period. Recent planting enhancement, bank
stabilization, and structure placement at the Holden Road site appear to have sustained the site's
water quality and habitat suitability.
