On January 18, 2011, Mack Wiggins of the North Carolina Division of Water Quality, Surface Water
Protection Section, Raleigh Regional Office, conducted a compliance evaluation inspection of the
United Parcel Service, 2008 Fay Street, Durham, NC. The assistance and cooperation of Mr. John
Sanders, Ms. Chris Pulliam and Mr. Lyn Hughes, was very helpful and appreciated during the
inspection process.
1. The following observations were made during the inspection:
1. This is a United Parcel Service customer center. This location is primarily engaged in
shipping documents, small packages and packaging supplies.
2. This facility has three stormwater outfalls. No outfalls have representative status.
a. Stormwater Outfall 001 receives stormwater run-off from the northwestern portion
of the property. The stormwater is discharged to the City of Durham stormwater
system. Stormwater is fed to this outfall from roof drains, the fuel Island, scrap
metal bin, storage sheds, dumpsters and axles. This outfall was clear of debris and
accessible. There was no visible discharge from this outfall at the time of the
inspection.
b. Stormwater Outfall 002A receives stormwater run-off from the eastern portion of
the property which is discharged to Ellerbee Creek. Stormwater is fed to this outfall
from roof drains, tire storage and storage sheds. This outfall was clear of debris and
accessible. There was no visible discharge from this outfall at the time of the
inspection.
