This letter serves as a follow up to the self report made to your office on September 25, 2006 at 11:10 AM.
Midmorning on September 24, 2006 it was noted by Maintenance and janitorial that alkaline water from our rinse
operations was overflowing the secondary containment dike which houses an 8,000 gallon alkaline water tank. It is
estimated that anywhere from 10 to 100 gallons was released. The containment dike is equipped with a high level
alarm that did not respond; however, the situation was quickly noticed and immediately addressed. Maintenance is
currently looking in to this issue and corrective actions have been put in place.
The alkaline water stream generated at Freightliner — Mt. Holly only contains a 1 to 2% concentration of a mild
alkaline cleaner and a 0.05 — 0.20% of a rinse aid product. None of the components in the alkaline cleaner or rinse
aid are SARA 302/313 listed and there are not any associated Reportable Quantities under CERCtA in these
products. A grab sample was taken from our north stormwater retention basin area and the pH measured 6.4. All
stormwater runoff from the Freightliner sites drains to unnamed tributaries of the Catawba River. At the time of
inspection no discoloration or visible sheen was noticed.
