Stuart Pierce, UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE TRYON STREET P. O. BOX 265 WINTON, NC 27986 SUBJECT: Irrigation Information CWNA - Stuart Pierce DATE: December 13, 1995 TO: Henry Wicker US Army Corps of Engineers, Representative Provided in this letter is my recommendation concerning the construction of a dug pond for the purpose of collecting and storing irrigation water for adjacent cropland. Mr. Pierce has requested in his 401 & 404 permit application that a pond be constructed approximately 100' x 1500'. A significant portion of this area will be located beside the existing watershed canal which is 6 - 7.5 feet deep which has altered the hydrology in an area at least 200 feet from the canal itself. The exact area of wetlands being affected may only be as small as 2 acres even if the actual pond size is larger {area to be irrigated is approximately 275 acres as shown on the attached map}. The 100 x 1500' pond size is not excessive considering that water may not be stored much above the elevation of the bottom of the adjacent watershed canal. Recharge into the pond from the watershed canal can not be accurately determined during peak use periods. If the pond is built then care should be taken to construct using appropriate side slopes and proper spoil placement and stabilization. ..c:J ~ Y:?0'~ William P.
