Public Education and Outreach
• Participated on Lockwood Folly AdvisoryTeam for TMDL Study and
Implementation Plan.
• Maintained Stormwater Pollution Prevention Hotline. Announced hotline
via utility bill inserts (Oak Island Tribune) and local government access
channel.
• Distributing Stormwater pollution prevention documentation at Town
Recreation Center and Town Hall.
• Multiple NPS educational advertisements purchased in State Port Pilot
regarding proper lawn care, general NPS pollution, 10 Things You Can
Do To Prevent Stormwater Pollution, Fertilizer Use, "Town of Oak Island
Used Oil Recycling Center, Scoop the Poop.
• Participated in Oak Island Parks and Recreation "I" Crawl Festival" with
booth. Distributed NPS/Stormwater pollution prevention educational
materials.
• Conducted public Rain Garden Workshop on December 8, 2011 in
cooperation with Director of Brunswick County office of North Carolina
Cooperative Extension. Fourteen (14) "rown of Oak Island employees
attended workshop as part of our Good Housekeeping training program.
• Participated with booth in Tall Community Spooktakular event sponsored
by Town of Oak island Parks and Recreation Department. Distributed
non -point source pollution prevention educational materials.
• Distributed information about the tall hazardous household waste
collection program conducted by Brunswick County.

• Conducted presentation at November 29, 2011 'Town Council meeting
regarding stormwater runoff regulations and improvement of Town policy
regarding the capture and treatment of runoff.
Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination
• Conducted dry weather inspections of stormwater discharge points
throughout MS4.
• Distributed informational brochures regarding the Town Illicit Discharge
Ordinance.
• Maintained Stormwater System Map (GIS) and Stormwater Pollution
Hotline.
• Conducted employee training for public works employees regarding
detecting and reporting illicit discharges and proper use of
vehicle/equipment cleaning station with oil/water separator.
Construction Site Runoff Controls
• The Town has provided through educational brochures and establishment
and promotion of the stormwater pollution hotline a means for the public
to notify the appropriate authorities (Stormwater Director— Public Works
Department) of observed erosion and sedimentation problems.
Post -Construction Site Runoff Controls
The Town Council adopted the Phase 11 Post -Construction ordinance after
review and approval from NCDWQ. The ordinance requires long-term
operation and maintenance of structural BMPs and annual inspection
reports of permitted structural BMPs performed by a qualified
professional. Deed Restrictions and Protective Covenants are required for
compliance with the new Post -Construction ordinance. Improved
stormwater management plan guidance materials distributed to applicants
for single family and duplex development projects.
Pollution Prevention and Good Housekeeping for Municipal Operations
• Continued catch basin cleaning program.
• Continued operation of Town facility for disposal/recycling of used oil
and filters.
• Conducted training for public works employees regarding pollution
prevention and good housekeeping practices during routine departmental
functions.
• Conducted inspections of facilities and reviewed operations for good
housekeeping practices.

Public Education and Outreach
• Distributed EPA documents "The Solution to Stormwater Pollution", and
"Take the Stormwater Runoff Challenge" crossword puzzle to all 51' grade
students at Southport Elementary School.
• Conducted contractor education/outreach workshop including builders,
landscapers, surveyors, and Town community development services staff
regarding stormwater requirements for single-family residential
development.
• Distributed "Dirt in the Drain, Turtles Complain" Frisbees to all 5`h grade
students at Southport Elementary School.
• Participated on Lockwood Folly Advisory Team for TMDL Study and
Implementation Plan.
• Maintained Stormwater Pollution Prevention Hotline. Announced hotline
via utility bill inserts (Oak Island Tribune), local government access
channel and advertisement in the State Port Pilot newspaper.

Organized two volunteer community cleanup events, "Davis Creek
Cleanup" on April 10, 2010 and October 16, 2010.

• Distributed letter to all shoreline property owners within Oak Island
(1,078 letters sent) regarding water duality and residential BMPs.
• Distributed EPA documents "The Solution to Stormwater Pollution",
"Take the Stormwater Runoff Challenge" crossword puzzle and "10
Things You Can Do To Prevent Stormwater Pollution" to all 51h grade
students at Southport Elementary School.
• State Port Pilot newspaper article March 19, 2008-Stormwater Report to
Town Council.
• State Port Pilot newspaper article November 26, 2008 regarding
presentation to Southport Elementary School fifth -graders.
• Utility bill inserts were utilized to announce various stormwater initiatives
such as the Community Cleanup and Pubic Meeting regarding the
Stormwater Management Plan.
• Attended Earth Day Celebration at Southport Community Building and
distributed educational materials, conducted watershed awareness
presentations, and displayed a rain barrel.
• The Town continues to sponsor a rain barrel purchase program initiated
during the first year of the SW permit.
• Conducted public contest for Town stormwater logo.
• Conducted NPS awareness presentation prior to community cleanup
(2/21/09) of tributary to Davis Creek Complex (Montgomery Slough).
• Conducted educational presentation to Oak Island Fishing Club regarding
NPDES Permit and stormwater impacts.
• Conducted classroom outreach activity (watershed/NPS awareness
utilizing EnviroscapeTM presentations — 51h grade at Southport Elementary
School 2008-2009 SY).
• Distributing promotional giveaways (refrigerator magnets)
• Displayed signs at Public Meeting concerning BMPs for construction
activities and sources of NPS pollution.
