Jim Durham and Scott Brewer (ORC) were met on -site and were very helpful during the inspection. This site uses a series of irrigation pumps to apply water onto stored lumber in six storage basins. This is done to preserve lumber quality prior to use in the adjacent mill. The applied water is collected in each lumber storage basin and conveyed back to the storage pond by a series of screened culverts. If needed to maintain the minimum 12" freeboard requirement, excess water that accumulates after rainfall events is transferred to the Riegelwood Mill (NC0003298) for treatment and disposal. All required documentation was made available during the inspection. Records documented daily (Monday -Friday) site inspections including storage pond level, precipitation amounts and make-up water status recorded on a field sheet and compiled into a spreadsheet. Records of water transfer to the Riegelwood Mill for water disposal are maintained on a separate spreadsheet. The operations staff also maintain a Quarterly Physical Inspection sheet that includes a more comprehensive site inspection and notes any needed repairs or site improvements. A review of the operations documents indicated several transfers of wastewater to the Riegelwood Mill during 2019 due to seasonal rainfall. Make-up water was documented also (water source is raw water from the Cape Fear River). A tour of the wood storage yard was conducted, the woodyard stockpile of material is near capacity at this time, all equipment appeared clean and well maintained and no evidence of any runoff from the wastewater irrigation was evident. Some of the culvert screens within the log storage basins had been repaired. The berms surrounding the 9 million gallon water storage pond were well maintained. The irrigation pumps are housed in a building immediately adjacent to the irrigation storage pond, one pump was being rebuilt and the remaining pumps and equipment appeared well maintained. Daily check sheet was available in the pump house documenting pond level, precipitation amounts and make-up water additions.
