Plant Bypasses and Sanitary System Overflows July 1, 2018, through June 30, 2019
In fiscal year 2019, CFPLIA's collection system experienced 33 sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) resulting in a total of 121,218 gallons of
wastewater overflow, and 104,993 of those gallons reached surface waters. Hurricane Florence directly impacted 25 of those 33 SSOs.
Northside Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) experienced one plant bypass releasing 951 gallons, 250 of which reached the Cape Fear
River. Southside Wastewater Treatment Plant experienced three plant bypasses into the Cape Fear River. The first bypass released 500
gallons, the second bypass released 5,250,000 gallons during Hurricane Florence, and the third bypass released 30,000 gallons. The list below
details all sanitary sewer overflows and plant bypasses that resulted in 1,000 gallons or more reaching surface waters.
