It is our understanding that the Corps plans to include this work in the existing permit that was issued to the Coast Guard for the complete channel dredging operation. We further understand that the spoil is to be discharged to adequate diked spoil disposal areas. On the basis of the above we agree that the project will not create water quality problems and can be considered certified under our general certification for diked upland disposal. Barnec, CGCGD5 (Cpl), 27 Febru&ry 1986 1. As discussed in reference fa), the Coast Guard requests emergency authorization to perform dredging at U.S. Coast Guard Station Swansboro. 2. A Corps of Engineers survey 'performed 13 Decem1er 1985 revceled the need to remove 18,000 cubic yards of silty sRnd from the area shown in red on the attached plot plan. 3. The area is approximately 925 feet long and is between channel r.1arker 1 and 3. The existi.ng water depth is approxirae..tely 2 to 3 feet at mean low \-later. Our 30 foot vessels Cllnnot transit this area and are required to tie up in the tov."11 of S"'~ansboro. This causes an unacceptable increase in travel time when responding to search and rescue missions. fl. The Coast Guard \vil1 only perform emergency dredging at this time. The drecging will only be performed in the area stated previously. The channel \';i1l be brought back to a depth of 6 feet at mesn 10'\oJ' water and will have a bottom width of 90 feet. 5. Th,e northern port ion of the channel shown en this plot p Ian of the proposed dredging is no longer used by the Coast Guard due to frequent shoaling. 6. t.:r.
