On June 26, 2019, this Office received a copy of an e-mail complaint of sewage odors at the
McCoy Creek Lift Station. The complaint was generated by Mr. Dale Whitley who lives at 372
McCoy's Creek Circle in Oakboro, NC. Although the subject complaint was responded to by the
USEPA, this Office conducted a follow up on -site investigation. The investigation was conducted
by Mr. Roberto Scheller of this Office at 10:51 a.m. on July 23, 2019.
At the time of site investigation four (4) sites were monitored for sewer gas odors (see attached
map). A slight odor of hydrogen sulfide was detected at 402 McCoy's Creek Lift Station (Site #2).
A light odor of hydrogen sulfide was also noted at Site #3 which is slightly up gradient of the lift
station. No odors were noted at Site #1 or Site #4.
It was noted that the subject lift station is located in a wooded valley 50 to 60 feet below
surrounding elevations. Wind speed, direction, and ambient air temperatures all may affect the
concentrations of odors in this area.
At time of site investigation, no strong or deplorable odors were detected. If you should have any
