Subject:sediment loss at Hwy 221, station 294 and 299
Hey Dave,
We recently found a couple sediment loss areas along HWY 221– station 294 and 299. Both issues are below pipes,
where the stormwater pushed rip rap and eroded the stream channels downstream of the pipes. It probably happened
a while back, during one of the intense rains we had late spring/early summer. However, the sites are blocked from
view by trees and vegetation, so that may have helped them go unnoticed.
The site at station 294 is not a JS, and it doesn’t look like the sediment ever made it to a JS – it was just spread out over
the field, overland. However, the site at Station 299 is a JS, and obviously some sediment entered the stream there. The
entire area was underwater a time or two this spring/summer from flooding, so it’s hard to say if all the sediment loss
was from us, or is mixed with sediment deposited naturally by Old Field Creek and South Fork New River. Also, much of
the sediment at both sites appears to be from ground that was tore up downstream of the project from the sheer
volume of water existing the two pipes.
A landowner contacted us about the Station 294 site Monday, so I went and checked it, and while there, noticed the
station 299 issue. I’m going by the field office tomorrow and will work with our staff to ensure the sites are cleaned
up. We plan to pick up any large rocks or rip rap deposited in the field, and will seed and mat the rest of the sediment
layer on the field. In addition, we will also seed and mat any eroded stream banks at station 299.
Thanks,
Kevin
