SUBJECT: Emergency Dredging, wainwright Channel, Carteret
County, North Carolina
1.. In accordance with the MOA between the Wilmington Di8trict
and the North Carolina Department of Environmo-nt, Health, and
Natural Resources, we are pursuing the emergency dredging of a
shoal in Wainwright Channel between Beacons #3A and #5.
2. complaints have baen received from the Carteret County
Government and the Carteret County Economiq Development Council
on November 24, 1993.
2. A survey performed on 9 December 1993 ClO arly indicates the
need to remove a shoal which has developed between Beacons #3A
and 05. Approximately 6,ooo cubic yards of material would
require ranoval to achieve sate passage through the channel by
the fishing fleet.
3. Routine maintenance dredging by the hydraulic pipeline dredgo
with material being placed, on Wainwright Island is not scheduled
to be performed within the next 3 months. The survey indicates
that the majority of the channel is at the oontrolling depth of 7
feet mlw and does not warrant pursuing a contract for a hydraulic
pipeline dredge in FY 94.
4. No alternative to declaring an emergency situation in
Wainwright Channel exists.
5. Upon receipt of approval the Corps of Engineere Dredge
CURRITUCK (a small hopper dredge) will perform the work. The
material will be disposed of in deep water between neacons #5 and
#?, as shown on the attached drawing.
6. The work will be performed in accordance with Water Quality
Certificate # 1332, issued on June 13, 19'79,.
