The Modified Rational Method is an extension of the rational method for rainfalls with durations greater than the time of concentration. The method was modified so that the concepts of the rational method (peak discharge) could be used to develop hydrographs for storage routing. The Modified Rational Method within PondPack calculates the storage volume for hydrographs,of rainfalls of various durations to determine the critical duration for the design storm as the one requiring the greatest detention storage volume. This critical duration is used to calculate the discharge rate and volume of water that is routed through the pond structure. The hydrograph developed maintains the calculated volume and adjusts the peak discharge rate accordingly. Thus, the peak discharge for the modified Rational Method is less than the calculated Rational Method Qpeak. The rainfall data used in this design was taken from the Intensity-Duration-Frequency Table for the Raleigh area published in the City of Raleigh Stormwater Management Design Manual. The time of concentration was set at 5 minutes for this design. The proposed extended detention wetland is designed to capture the runoff volume from the first 1-inch of rainfall and slowly release it over a 48 to 72 hour period. The outlet structure is also designed to attenuate the 2-.year storm to pre-development conditions and the 10-year storm to R-4 density conditions (compliance with CR-701.7). In addition, the wetland is designed to pass the 100-year design storm through the riser/barrel outlet structure of the pond.
