Describe the existing conditions on the site and the general land use in the vicinity of the project at the time of this application:* The Greensboro Science Center (GSC) is located within a 350 acre tract that also includes Country Park, Jaycee Park, a portion of Guilford Battleground Park, Lewis Recreation Center and Forest Lawn Cemetery. The GSC is a developed site with a 65,000 sf building and associated parking and a zoo with pathways and animal exhibits. The zoo expansion encompasses approximately 5 acres that is bisected by an existing stream and a small, online pond. The area to be developed was previously developed for animal exhibits, but is currently generally wooded. There are some existing pathways, buildings, fences and utilities within the project boundary. 4b. Have Corps permits or DWR certifications been obtained for this project (including all prior phases) in the past?* r- Yes r" No F Unknown 4d. List the total estimated acreage of all existing wetlands on the property: 4g. List the total estimated linear feet of all existing streams on the property: 1.33 miles 4h. Explain the purpose of the proposed project:* The zoo expansion will be constructed primarily using local bond funding and will include cassowary, hippo, okapi, cat, flamingo and red panda exhibits. The Greensboro Science Center's (GSC) conservation mission is to preserve species and habitats through on-site programs, community awareness, field studies and fundraising for local and global conservation efforts. The GSC vision recognizes that conservation and preservation of animals and habitats can only be realized by altering individual habits and behaviors, and by working collaboratively with organizations, academics and governing bodies to better our environment. The zoo expansion will allow the GCS to continue and expand it's educational and conservation activities bringing more programs and educational opportunities to citizens of and visitors to Greensboro. Additionally an animal hospital to allowfor proper care of the animals will be constructed and an outdoor gathering area to enhance the visitor experience and educational opportunities will be constructed. A greenway trail that accesses the exhibits will be constructed and create a loop to connect to the two current deadened exhibit trails. 41. Describe the overall project in detail, including indirect impacts and the type of equipment to be used:* The project will be constructed using standard mechanical construction equipment. However the site was redesigned so the southern trail will be elevated allowing for reduced impact to trees, the stream buffer and overall land disturbance. The exhibits were shaped to remain outside the stream buffer to the maximum extent practical and the greenways were redesigned to be located as far from the stream and pond edge as possible. The utilities were redesigned to remove a proposed impact to the stream and buffer associated with watermain construction. Impact to the pond is limited to removal of years of accumulated sediment. Samples of the sediment will be taken and utilized in current PhD and GSC research. Impact to wetlands is limited to repair of the currently breached dam. 4j. Specifically describe measures taken to avoid or minimize the proposed impacts in designing the project: The site was redesigned so the southern trail will be elevated allowing for reduced impact to trees, the stream buffer and overall land disturbance. The exhibits were shaped to remain outside the stream buffer to the mapmum extent practical and the greenways were redesigned to be located as far from the stream and pond edge as possible. The utilities were redesigned to remove a proposed impact to the stream and buffer associated with watermain construction. 1b. Specifically describe measures taken to avoid or minimize the proposed impacts through construction techniques: The site was redesigned so the southern trail will be elevated allowing for reduced impact to trees, the stream buffer and overall land disturbance. The installation of the boardwalk will allowfor more trees to remain and less grading will be required. 2. Compensatory Mitigation for Impacts to Waters of the U.S. or Waters of the State 2a. Does the project require Compensatory Mitigation for impacts to Waters of the U.S. or Waters of the State? r Yes r No 2b. If this project DOES NOT require Compensatory Mitigation, explain why: Impacts to the stream buffer are all allowable or exempt. Impacts to open water and wetlands are below mitigation thresholds. F.
