The majority of the sewer was constructed with 2 to 4 foot long segments of vitrified clay pipe and Oakum type joints. These types of joints tend to decay away over a period of years, making the sewers more susceptible to infiltration during high groundwater conditions. The newer areas of the sewer system have been constructed with precast concrete manholes and primarily with PVC plastic pipe. The integrity of the newer portion of the Town's system is far superior to that of the older, although both portions of the Town's system need ongoing inspection and maintenance as they age. Wastewater pumping stations are located throughout the gravity collection system at locations where topography prevents the connection by gravity. There are l I sewage pump stations currently in service. Pumps are of three types. Submersible duplex pump stations, suction lift duplex pump stations, and duplex extended shaft, dry well mounted, solids handling pump stations. The pumping stations have been inspected and deficiencies from current design standards noted. Table 1.2 lists the name, estimated year of construction, and capacity of each station.
