Facility Summary: Wilderness NC, Inc. (Wilderness) produces kiln -dried lumber. Freshly
milled lumber is delivered to their facility from offsite sources. Wilderness employees generate
100% domestic wastewater treated onsite by a Class WW-2 plant discharging via Outfall 001 and
kiln condensate from the lumber -drying process via Outfall 002. These both discharge to a UT to
Flat Swamp Creek. WWTP facilities include:
• aeration chamber
• sludge holding tank
• clarifier
• recirculating sand filter
• 5:1 flow splitter
• 1,500-gallon recirculation tank with air diffuser
• filter screens
• dual (2) pumps
• tablet chlorination and dechlorination
• polishing / settling pond (54-day retention)
Receiving Stream: This facility discharges to a UT to Flat Swamp Creek, a Class C waterbody
within the Yadkin -Pee Dee River Basin. This creek supports designated uses; not impaired — not
listed on the 2018 NC 303(d) list.
Compliance History & DMR Data Review - Jun2016 thru Jun2019: March and October of
2016 showed frequency violations for Temperature (no action — amended DMR). WSRO (Paul
DiMatteo) proceeded to NOD for Fecal Coliform violation in Nov2017. BIMS notes multiple
TRC violations, ignored per TRC policy as < 50 ug/L. WSRO (Paul DiMatteo) notes missing

WET -Testing and Instream Monitoring: This permit requires instream monitoring for
Temperature and Dissolved Oxygen upstream and downstream. Data is consistently similar at both
monitoring stations, and within water -quality standards. This permit does not require Whole
Effluent Toxicity (WET) testing - no permit changes recommended.
Renewal Change Summary: The Permittee has made no changes in processes or WWTP facilities
since last renewal. Monitoring and sampling include BOD-5 and Ammonia (summer / winter
limits consistent with similar Class -2 WWTPs) plus effluent and instream monitoring for
Dissolved Oxygen and Temperature. According to the renewal application, production volumes for
kiln drying are identical to those presented for the previous permit cycle - no permit changes
recommended.
Proposed Schedule for Issuance:
