Beth grew up in Northern Virginia,
vacationing with her family in Delaware and
Cape Cod as a child, where she participated
in naturalist programs and developed a
passion for coastal ecology. She holds a B.A.

Science from the College of William and
Mary, and a Ph.D, in Marine Science from
the University of South Alabama. Beth has
lived in Wilmington since 2014, and taught
classes and led research projects in UNCW's
Department of Biology and Marine Biology
for four years. Her research specialty is
estuarine ecology; specifically, using bivalves
such as oysters and clams as indicators of
land -use change. She is interested in water
quality, marsh ecology, and exploring how
humans can sustainably fit into the coastal
environment. When she is not at BHIC she
can also be found at her sons' baseball
games or Cub Scout events, or gardening,
kayaking, or cycling. Beth is looking forward
to further developing the Conservancy's
research program, and strengthening
relationships with scientific collaborators in
the Cape Fear region and beyond.

NEWS:
New role at Bald Head Island Conservancy
Beth has taken a newjob as Senior Scientist at a small but effective non-profit organization, Bald rlead island Conservancy. Bald Head Island is the
southernmost point in North Carolina, an island only accessible by ferry, at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. At her new job, she will still be involved
in research on her first loves, water quality and shellfish biology, but will expand her reach to other issues regarding barrier island conservation.
Beth will continue to work at UNCW on a part-time basis, primarily leading our NERRS Science Collaborative grant on shellfish aquaculture.

CMS Research:: Estuarine Ecology Laboratory
Researchers in the Estuarine Ecology Lab at CMS are taking an ecosystem approach to examining organisms and processes in
estuarine areas where the sea is in close contact with land, and where humans have changing influences on the environment.
Research focuses on tracing nutrient and organic matter sources to the water column, sediments, and organisms throughout the
food web, focusing on commercially -important bivalve species as indicator organisms. The lab conducts interdisciplinary,
collaborative research with other marine scientists, federal and state policymakers, anthropologists, and paleoecologists, to support
coastal resource management decisions.

Tony Rodriguez
Professor
Dr. Rodriguez is a coastal geologist who uses empirical field-based studies to
examine changes in the configuration of our coastal areas that result from
fluctuations in water level, wind, waves, currents and anthropogenic
activities. He is particularly interested in how coastal sedimentation and
morphology evolves over time scales ranging from days to millennia with
changes in sea level, storminess, and land use. He also collaborates with
many of his colleagues at UNC examining anthropogenic and climate
impacts on the ecogeomorphology of marsh, oyster -reef, and beach
environments.
