The Merger Team concurred on this date of May 16, 2019, that the following alternatives will
be carried forward for detailed study.
Preliminary Best -Fit Alternative: Widen US 321/US 421 to include four 12-foot travel lanes, the
addition of a 30-foot median and five-foot paved shoulders to accommodate bicycles. Widening will
utilize a best -fit design, that will shift the widening to either the east or the west, and/or symmetrically
and that is consistent with NCDOT design standards and policy guidelines, as a means of avoiding and/or
minimizing impacts to environmental and community features. For the purposes of this meeting a
preliminary best -fit alignment was developed to facilitate discussions of the concept.
No Build Alternative: This includes routine maintenance and no improvements.
