Both received in excess of 10 inches of rain over the weekend. Hardin Rd is near competition. As a result, practically the entire work area is vegetated. This helped a bunch given the rain over the weekend. I received reports that we lost sediment off site in two locations, Sta 53+50RT and Sta 60+50RT. The sediment loss was a result of a couple overwhelmed basins and silt fence issues. At the two stations mentioned, the contractor reported removing 1- 2, 5 gallon buckets from and adjacent to a small UT on the project site. The contractor has been onsite this week repairing basins and silt fence issues. I visited Tuesday afternoon and the project looked like it survived the rain event well. At Sampson Rd, the ditch lines were running full and many of the rock checks were breached during the rain event. Much of the flow crossed the road and ran along the silt fence. At a few locations, the silt fence was breached and the flow left the site, and some silt undoubtly flowed into the adjacent stream. However, there was no visible sediment in the stream following the storm event to help us estimate how much was lost. Luckily, the watershed is very rocky, with limited red clay/dirt. While I don't have a good estimate regarding sediment lost to the stream, I did visit today and took some photos of the clean-up effort. Basins and ditchlines had been cleaned out and re -rocked any damaged silt fence areas had been repaired (a couple photos attached above). Definitely one of the biggest rain events I can remember up here, and hope it's a while before we see anything similar. I'll follow up with information about HWY 221, as well as a couple bridge projects that I was informed about regarding sediment losses this weekend. Subject: Sediment loss on HWY 221, Ashe County Dave, Eric, and Steve, We had well over 10 inches of rain this weekend along HWY 221 (TIP R-2915) in Watauga and Ashe County. Initial reports suggest the A and B sections handled the rain pretty well, but we did have some measurable sediment loss at a few stations on the C section. Specifically, at stations 303+00 Rt., 332+00 Rt., and 354+00 Lt. and Rt. I'm going to head up there this afternoon and will get some photos, and will follow up with photos later this week documenting our cleanup efforts. I would not be surprised to hear of other issues in northwest NC, given the rain we received. I'll be sure to pass along any additional issues that I'm notified of. Steve and Eric — Let me know if I should send these reports to a different USACE staff member. I wasn't sure...
