Hey Dave and Steve,
Our district staff contacted me Tuesday to let me know about some sediment loss at two bridge to culvert sites in Wilkes
County (Bridge 403 and 700 over Little Creek - SAW-2017-01457 and NCDWR 20170848v2).
Like Ashe and Watauga counties, western Wilkes was also hit hard with rain over the weekend. The two culverts are
right beside each other, separated by approximately 200 ft. They estimated 1 - 2 cubic yards of silt loss for the entire
project, although there was no visible sediment in the stream following the event. The contractor went to work in the
early part of this week regrading and cleaning all SDO's. I checked their NPDES forms today and stopped by for some
photos to show their cleanup efforts.
Everything looked to be repaired and in good shape. They were doing some final grading on one of the slopes, and were
getting ready to put down matting on all the slopes and some additional temporary rock silt checks in the ditch lines. All
the special sediment control structures had been cleaned and replenished with fresh stone (see photo). One of the
biggest issues was sediment runoff from an adjoining driveway (see photos). The have fixed this location with fresh
stone and silt fence. They expect to have the project complete and out of there late next week. Since there was
sediment lost, I wanted to report it and send some photos. Let me know if you have any additional questions.
