Inspection Summary:
On Tuesday April 22, 2014 WSRO staff made a site visit to Mr. Shawn Cheek's farm (parcel ID No. 4858-0053-8125) as the result of
an anonymous complaint received concerning cattle impact to a stream crossing under Rena Road in Hamptonville (Unnamed
tributary to Dobbins Creek). The site investigation revealed the following:
• Some stream bank erosion and denuded areas were noted along the stream on each side of Rena Road.
• No algal or fungal growth was observed in the stream areas under investigation.
• No odor was detected in the stream areas under investigation.
• No sludge worms were observed in the stream areas under investigation.
• Water samples were not collected during this investigation.
While the main observable impact to the surface waters from the cattle was stream bank erosion, there is the potential for additional
adverse water quality impacts (e.g. presence of Fecal coliform bacteria levels in excess of the NC State Water Quality Limits). This
office recommends that cattle access to the subject stream areas be on a limited basis, and vegetation be established in the denuded
areas along the stream banks.
