Property acquisitions on the north and east sides of the active ash basin in early 2017
allowed for the installation of ten additional groundwater assessment wells at the H.F.
Lee Energy Complex in June 2017. The locations of the 10 additional assessment wells
(AMW-19S/BC through AMW-23S/BC) are shown on Figure 1. Comprehensive Site
Assessment (CSA) and historical groundwater monitoring results indicated there was
potential in these areas for groundwater constituent concentrations greater than 2L. The
additional well installations allowed for further delineation of constituent distribution
on the north and east sides of the ash basin. This memo summarizes well development
and initial sampling of the additional assessment wells. Analytical results are
summarized in Table 1. Boring logs are included as Attachment 1.
WELL DEVELOPMENT AND SAMPLING
Shortly after well installation, all ten wells were developed for approximately two
hours each after allowing grout to cure for at least 24 hours. Additional development
was conducted July 31 to August 2 in order to achieve low turbidity (<10 NTUs) and pH
less than 8.5 prior to sampling.
Nine of the ten new wells were sampled in August. A sample was not collected from
AMW-23S in August 2017 due to high turbidity. Well AMW-23S was further developed
and sampled for the first time on September 21, 2017.
ANALYTICAL RESULTS
Of the nine wells (AMW-19BC/S through AMW-23BC) sampled in August 2017, all had
a final pH less than 8.5 S.U.s and turbidity less than 10 NTUs. AMW-23S was sampled
in September 2017, pH was below 8.5 S.U.s, however, final turbidity was high (26.6
NTUs). Analytical results for boron and arsenic were below 2L in all ten wells. Iron
concentrations exceeded the 2L in all of the samples. Exceedances of 2L or IMAC for
cobalt, manganese, and vanadium were detected in several wells. Table 1 summarizes
