Box 742 100 West Pine Street Mr. Wes Bell m• Division of Water Resources Mooresville Regional Office MAY 17-2019 Dear Mr. Bell, Telephone 828-428-9921 Fax 828-428-9964 Maiden, North Carolina 28650 I am writing in response to the COD March discharge NOV South Fork Industries received on May 8,2019. We have received two NOV violations for COD since our limits were lowered on our new permit. We had asked for our limits to continue the same as before because of the type processing we do in our facility. We had been passing all our COD limits before the decrease. I first would like to ask if we could have a increase in our Cod limits. I understand that creats problems but the lower limits have already caused us to limit our production of some processes and has caused us to loose business opportunities. We are investigating ways to reduce our wastewater COD readings. We have been trying to reduce it by getting all our existing equipment operating correctly and have been trying several different chemicals to reduce the foaming in our basins that limit air intake. We have an engineer computing data for us to size air pumps to force air into our basins to improve our COD readings. We hope to have our first basin fitted for air injection over the week of July 4th as that is our normal week for vacation shutdown. Once we have one basin operating we will use that info to determine how to retrofit our second basin. i know that it is six weeks out but it will take that long for us to get all equipment ready and installed. I also would like for you to provide us with any suggestions as to how others have handled this problem. We have dyeing procedures that require high amounts of a reducing agent and that is what effects or Cod limits. We are one of only to facilities in the US doing this process and most of the work is for military or safety workwear. We have long term contracts and we have been doing these for several years without any problems until the reduction in our permit levels. So any information that you have to help us would be greatly appreciated. If any further information is required or can be provided please contact me at everette@southforkind.com.
