On 10110/97, staff from the Fayetteville Regional Office of the Division of Water Quality
inspected the your swine farm. It was observed that the spray fields serving this operation were
in poor condition as they saturated due to improper drainage. In addition, it was also noted that
the liquid level in the lagoon was approximately 18" from the low point of the dam.
Therefore, the Division of Water Quality strongly recommends that you do not use the
current spray fields for waste application and you attempt to clear other acreage immediately for
future irrigation. Once this land has been cleared, you are asked to immediately establish a
winter cover crop so that you can lower your lagoon level and maintain the required 19" of
combined freeboard and storage at all times. It the above conditions cannot be met, you may
be asked to seek other alternatives to address your waste management dilemma and avoid a
possible discharge of waste to surface waters of the State.
Please notify this office in writing by no later than December 5, 1997 at the address
located on the bottom of this page as to the actions taken or proposed to be taken to resolve these
deficiencies.
