The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has started the project
development, environmental and engineering studies for the subject project. The project is
included in the 2018-2027 North Carolina State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP),
and is scheduled for right of way acquisition in State Fiscal Year 2023 and construction in State
Fiscal Year 2025, although there may be opportunities to advance those schedules. The project
is being developed using State funds under the North Carolina State Environmental Policy Act
(SEPA.)
The proposed project is about 6.8 miles long and would involve modernizing NC 343 to
provide one eleven -foot travel lane in each direction, with six-foot wide shoulders (four feet
paved and two feet turf.) Left turn lanes will be provided where warranted at major
intersections. The project would also include replacement of two bridges on NC 343 and
improvements to an existing at -grade railroad crossing with Chesapeake and Albemarle Railroad.
The attached figure shows the project location and study area.
