Subject: Review of Progress Energy, McGuire Nuclear Station (NC 0024392) Environmental
Monitoring Report (2016).
Dear Mr. Snider:
Thank you for your submission of the 2016 Environmental Monitoring Data for the McGuire Nuclear
Station. Based on a review of the limnological and fisheries data provided it appears that McGuire
Nuclear Station is having little limnological impact and no significant long-term impact to fish populations
in Lake Norman. It also appears that thermal limits were in compliance for 2016. We acknowledge that
the overall fish community structure of Lake Norman has changed slightly over the years for many
explainable reasons, including the unauthorized stocking of Alabama Bass (previously thought to be
Spotted Bass), but these changes have not been the result of operations at either of the two power
stations (McGuire Nuclear Station or Marshall Steam Station). Fisheries results for 2016 are similar to
previous years, and data suggest the presence of a sustaining and balanced fish community in Lake
Norman (as well as other biological indicators that appear normal for a piedmont reservoir).
If you have any questions regarding these comments or requests, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Cyndi Karoly
