Below is a response to your request for additional information for the Meredith College project, along with supplemental information attached. Stephanie, cc'ing you as an FYI and so you have the revised information. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. 1. An explanation for how the proposed Lakebed Sediment Removal will be accomplished. This explanation should also include a description for where and how the dredged material will be excavated and stockpiled. Are there sediment and erosion control plans for the project that cover this information? The proposed sediment removal will be accomplished via single-handed excavation and immediately placed in an upland disposal area, near the the adjacent athletic fields. See attached drawing for where the dredged material will be stockpiled, along with planned erosion control measures. 2. Provide a more descriptive narrative or plans for how the dam impoundment will be repaired/improved. The impoundment is being widened and will permanently impact 0.23 acre of open water which is pushing the limits of a Nationwide Permit 3. Explain why the dam needs to be widened as proposed? Is this typical for dam repair projects? This may fit better under a NWP 39. The existing impoundment contains many structural issues, including trees, varmint holes, an undersized control structure, and damage from a recent breach. As this is a high hazard dam in an urban area upstream of a state road, it is critical for the repairs to be made in order to ensure the long-term structural stability. The existing trees will be removed, and any remaining or existing holes will be back-filled with compacted soils. The entire length of the existing control structure will be grouted, and will be replaced with a new primary control structure which will extend below the ordinary high water mark of the pond. Proposed grading and fill with compacted soils near the southern corner of the impoundment will provide increased stability to the impoundment itself. A secondary spillway with a bottom -drain will be installed near the northern corner of the impoundment, which also involves a minor amount of fill placed below the ordinary high water mark of the pond. Impacts associated with the repairs to the impoundment and primary and secondary spillways now total approximately 0.10 acres. 3. Has the applicant considered installing fore bays at the headwaters of the pond in order to capture sediments from typical storm events? The fore bays, if properly maintained, could provide a way to minimize sedimentation into the larger extent of the pond. It is not anticipated that fore bays will be necessary to capture sediments as the majority of the resident watershed consists of existing infrastructure, maintained lawns, or wooded areas that would provide very little sediment input from typical storm events. It is likely that the accumulated sediments are relic from the time of the original construction, over 50 years ago. Attached: 1. Revised Plan Sheet C2.1 2. Revised Section 4 of PCN 3. Lakebed sediment dredging/disposal Plan Sheet Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions about the information provided.
