SUBJECT: NOTICE OF DEFICIENCY
Waller Farms
Facility No. 82 - 378
Sampson County
Dear Mr. Waller.
William G. Ross Jr., Secretary
Gregory J. Thorpe, Ph.D.
Acting Director
Division of Water Quality
On July 31, 2001, staff from the Fayetteville Regional Office of the Division of Water Quality, conducted an
inspection of the Waller Farm in Sampson County. The inspection revealed that the majority of the bermuda grass crop
in one waste application fields did not survive the winter and the small grain overseed resulting in the predominant
vegetation in these fields being crabgrass, fall panicium, and signal grass. In addition, waste was applied in the months
of December and January on the small grain overseed which are not included in the application windows for the crop:
An area of concern was observed by the inspector at the toe of the old lagoon that potentially could be a seep (leak).
The Division of Water Quality requests that the following items be addressed:
The bermuda grass waste application fields will need to be resprigged in the early spring of 2002 due to the loss
of the stand. Contact an agronomist for assistance with preplant recommendations.
2. Comply with the application windows for the crop as outlined in your CAWMP. The 100 pound small grain
overseed has a split application window during the months of September and October and February and March
respectively.
3. Monitor the wet area at the toe of the lagoon dike (old lagoon) for possible changes. The Division of Water
Quality will reinspect and sample this area to determine if the water contains waste.
