SUBJECT: NOTICE OF DEFICIENCY
M & K Matthis Farm
Facility No. 82 - 96
Sampson County
Dear Mr. Matthis:
William G. Ross Jr., Secretary
Gregory J. Thorpe, Ph.D,
Acting Director
Division of Water Quality
On August 15, 2001, staff from the Fayetteville Regional Office of the Division of Water Quality, conducted an
inspection of the M & K Matthis Farm in Sampson County. The inspection revealed that wastewater was ponding in the
diversion ditch adjacent to the waste application field. In addition, the inside slope of the lagoon had been sprayed with
a combination of 2-4-D and round up by mistake resulting in the loss of the cover grass.
The Division of Water Quality requests that the following items be addressed:
The waste application fields appeared compacted as a result of the cattle grazing and the soi I type and may need
aerating to assist in the infiltration of the wastewater to prevent future run off and possible discharges. Consult
with an agronomist for assistance.
2. Evaluate the inside slope of the lagoon dikes to determine if a cover grass will need to be replanted to prevent
erosion of the dike .
