Proiect Descrption: Replace Bridge No. 97 on SR 1929 (Philadelphia Church Road) over
Lanes Creek (no off-site detour specified in resubmitted review request). Project
ori inall reviewed in 2016 as B-5825 WBS No. 45769.1.1.
SUMMARY OF HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPES REVIEW
DESCRIPTIONOFREVIEWACTIVITIES, RESULTS, AND CONCLUSIONS: HPOWeb reviewed on 18 February
2016 14 November 2018 and yielded no NR, SL, LD, DE, or SS properties in the Area of Potential Effects
(APE). Union County current GIS mapping, aerial photography, and tax information indicated a
predominantly wooded APE (viewed 18 February 2016 and 14 November 2018). The APE intersects a
large parcel to the west and southwest of the existing bridge and contains resources dating to the early
1960s located approximately 6500 feet to the southwest well beyond likely project impact. Bridge No. 97,
built in 1965, is not eligible for the National Register as it is not representative of any distinctive
engineering or aesthetic type. Google Maps "Street View" confirmed the absence of critical architectural
and landscape resources in the APE (viewed 18 February 2016 and 14 November 2018).
No architectural survey is required for the project as currently defined.
WHY THE A VAILABLE INFORMATION PROVIDES A RELIABLE BASIS FOR REASONABL Y PREDICTING THAT
THERE ARE NO UNIDENTIFIED SIGNIFICANT HISTORIC ARCHITECTURAL OR LANDSCAPE RESOURCES IN
THBPROJECTAREA: APE extends 600 feet from either end of the existing bridge and 200 feet to either
side of the SR 1929 (Philadelphia Church Road) centerline to encompass proposed construction. The
comprehensive architectural survey of the county (1982) and later additions record no properties in the
APE (Suzanne S. Pickens, ed., 'Sweet Union':• An Architectural and Historica/ Survey of Union County, North Carolina (Monroe,
NC: Union County Board of Commissioners, Monroe-Union County Historic Properties Commission, and Union County Historical
society, i99o)). County GIS/tax materials and other visuals support the absence of significant architectural
and landscape resources. No National Register-listed properties are located within the APE or along the
proposed off-site detour route.
Should the design of the project change, please notify NCDOT Historic Architecture
as additional review mav be necessarv.
