Department of Transportation will hold an Open-House and Design Public Meeting for the proposed U.S. 70 Havelock Bypass on Monday, August 31 at the Havelock Tourist and Event Center, located at 201 Tourist Center Drive in Havelock. An informal open-house will be held prior to the formal public meeting in the main hall of the Center. Interested citizens may also drop in anytime during the open house from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The formal presentation will begin at 7 p.m., and conclude with a public comment period. The presentation will consist of an explanation of the proposed location and design of the preferred alternative, information about the state-federal relationship, right of way and relocation requirements and future activities and procedures that will be part of the project. Citizens will be able to speak, ask questions and/or turn in comments immediately following the formal presentation. The presentation and public comment period will be recorded and a written transcript will be prepared. Anyone wishing to speak at the formal public meeting may register at the sign-in table during the open-house hours. Written comments bear the same weight as spoken comments. The proposed project will be constructed on a new location (bypass) on the southwest side of Havelock and U.S. 70. The proposed road begins north of the Havelock City limits and extends south for approximately 10 miles to the Craven-Carteret County line. The proposed roadway section will be a four-lane, median- divided highway that will provide a high-speed alternative to using existing U.S. 70 through Havelock, which is slowed by numerous traffic signals at intersecting side streets. Maps displaying the proposed location and design of the preferred alternative of the U.S. 70 Havelock Bypass will be available for public review at the following locations: o City of Havelock — City Planning Office, 1 Governmental Drive, Havelock; o New Bern Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, 300 Pollock Street, New Bern; and o NCDOT District Office, 209 South Glenburnie Road, New Bern o The maps can also be found online at: http://www.ncdot.gov/proiects/publicmeetins/ For more information, please contact Diane Wilson, NCDOT- Human Environment Section, by phone at (919) 707-6073 or via email at pdwilsonl(ancdot.ov.
