Steve,
See notes below regarding the Anderson Farm Mitigation Bank site visit on March 12, 2019
In Attendance:
Mac Haupt, Zan Price — DWR
Steve Kichefski, Todd TugwelI — Corps
Brent Manning — Headwaters Restoration
The group walked the site starting at the upstream section of UT -1. Representative sections of UT -1 were observed
down to the confluence of UT -2. The group walked up UT -2 to the large maple tree and then walked the majority of UT -
Site notes:
-No channel instability was observed
-Channel aggradation was observed in sections likely due to sediment inputs, dense herbaceous vegetation along the
channel, and the small drainage areas. The interagency review team (IRT) did not have any concerns with the stream
maintaining a single -thread channel, with the exception of the upper 40 -feet of UT -1 that demonstrated more wetland
seep characteristics.
-Extensive invasive vegetation (e.g. kudzu and privet) was observed throughout the project, especially in UT -1. The bank
sponsor has not been successful with managing invasives up to this point. The IRT does not support the use of goats to
manage invasive vegetation. This method has not been effective and can also negatively impact the desired native
riparian vegetation. Brent M stated that the sponsor had contracted with an invasive control company to eradicate the
kudzu both inside and outside the easement boundaries on the site. The IRT stated that other invasive species such as
privet and multi -flora rose should also be treated.
-DWR supports the Corps decision to hold mitigation credit releases (25%) for at least the next two growing seasons to
determine if the invasive treatments are successful.
-Supplemental planting was observed in UT -3
-The bank sponsor is actively pruning pine trees in the lower reaches to allow the planted woody species to get
established in the buffer. According to Brent, the sponsor will continue to prune the pine trees as needed.
