Shaver, Brad E CIV USARMY CESAW (US); Steenhuis, Joanne; Rivenbark, Chris; Wilson, Travis W. Subject: RE: U-5741 Northeast Creek geotech borings Hi Curtis, It will take approximately 4 weeks to collect all the borings. The borings will be advanced using the mud rotary method. This involves setting a piece of 4" or 6" diameter casing between the drill rig on the barge and the river bed to contain the drilling fluid and cutting returns. The drilling itself is rotational, but it is encased. The soil samples are collected by hammering a sampler at specified intervals. All soil samples, drilling fluid and cutting returns are disposed off-site. Let me know if you need more info. Subject: U-5741 Northeast Creek geotech borings Curtis and Travis, NCDOT is proposing to replace bridge no. 7 on NC 24 over Northeast Creek in Onslow County as part of TIP U-5741. In order to determine what sort of bents will be used in the design, approximately seven geotechnical borings (3.5 inches in diameter) need to be taken from the streambed (see attached). This crossing forms the boundary between coastal and inland waters and is subject to a Primary Nursery Area moratorium between Feb. 1 and Sept. 30. Due to the minimal in-water impact from this activity, NCDOT is requesting to complete this work during the moratorium period. All work will be done from a barge. If you have questions or concerns before providing a decision, please let us know.
