Cindy,
Your time today was much appreciated and I wanted to follow up on our conversation discussing the recent biological
process struggles here at our facility. As mentioned earlier, we experienced a plant upset the week of January 13t" thru
18t". It appears that we were hit twice that week and again on the 20t". In each instance we noticed a sudden spike on
the aeration trains in DO followed closely with an increase in pH & turbidity, indicating a loss of nitrification. The
ammonia samples reflected this as well with elevated results but were surprisingly quick to recover in roughly 2 days.
The main concern to compliance was the increased solids loading (TSS) and our inability to disinfect. WSACC's
Pretreatment Manager, discovered a possible source in an older industrial site (Phillip Morris) being cleaned up with
roughly 1.5 MG of cooling tower liquid that had been drained to our plant. We have been feeding polymer to address
solids and disinfection concerns but are currently trying to nurse our biology back to a healthy population.
I'm concerned that our WWTP is not fully representative of our true plant effluent discharge at this time and would like
to request an extension to include a March toxicity sample option. I appreciate your consideration in this matter and
please feel free to call if you have any questions.
Thank you,
,lac e
